A total of 31 multi-national companies on Thursday expressed interest in supplying suitable technology to the Chennai Corporation for its massive solid waste management initiative that includes remediation and scientific closure of the Perungudi and Kodungaiyur dumpyards.

People forced to leave their vehicles on the road because of lack of parking space in commercial/residential buildings will soon be able to drive to higher floors and park safely.

The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority has recommended to the State government to permit multi-level parking in all buildings. The decision to relax rules regarding development of parking space was taken following a representation by the Confederation of Real Estate Developers' Associations of India-Tamil Nadu.

Chennai Corporation has planned to demarcate three new 100-acre sites on the outskirts for the city's solid waste management. The district administrations of the adjoining districts, including Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur, have kicked off their search for the right spot for pieces of land suitable for solid waste management based on instructions from the government.

NGO City Connect gives design inputs to Chennai Corporation

Residents of the city may soon have more recreation spaces at an unlikely venue – beneath flyovers. The Chennai Corporation has planned to turn untidy, unused areas beneath all its flyovers into vibrant public spaces. Accepting many of the proposals made by a consultant City Connect, an NGO, for optimum use of space beneath five flyovers at a meeting on Thursday, the civic body decided to cover all the flyovers in the city under the beautification scheme.

The proposed redevelopment of slum tenements on the Marina beach will not be funded by the World Bank anymore.

This is following the expiry of the deadline of December 2011 for the completion of the project. The project could not be completed as the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board was unable to relocate families on account of stiff resistance by residents of Nochi Kuppam, Dooming Kuppam and Srinivasapuram.

The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has cleared the proposal for construction of around 15,000 tenements by the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board at Perumbakkam.

The clearance follows the TNSCB fulfilling the requirement of constructing an 18-metre-wide road near the multi-storeyed buildings. The move seeks to facilitate the resettlement and rehabilitation of 15,000 families from the city. However, the TNSCB is planning to reduce the number of tenements proposed in the project.

Almost a year after the city's Climate Action Plan was prepared, the Chennai Corporation will finally adopt it in its council meeting next month.

The Plan, if approved by the State government, will provide a comprehensive prevention and action plan for the city to cope with disasters associated with climate change.In a recent meeting of senior officials with the team of experts which developed the plan, experts stressed the need for prompt adoption and implementation.

As many as 172 roads in the new areas of Chennai Corporation will be taken up for integrated redevelopment. Stormwater drains, pavements, streetlights and ducts for electrical cables would be provided besides re-laying of the roads under the project.

The new initiative would cover 112 km of roads in the Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, Ambattur, Valasaravakkam, Alandur, Perungudi and Sholinganallur zones of the civic body.

As many as 172 roads in the new areas of Chennai Corporation will be taken up for integrated redevelopment. Stormwater drains, pavements, streetlights and ducts for electrical cables would be provided besides re-laying of the roads under the project.

The Chennai Corporation will construct a stormwater drain network, totalling nearly 800 km, in the areas that have been merged with it as part of the measures to prevent water-logging.

The new areas come under the Corporation zones of Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, Ambattur, Valasaravakkam, Alandur, Perungudi and Sholinganallur. Areas where water-logging is severe would receive priority in implementation of the project.
