Land degradation, synonymous to desertification in arid, semi arid and sub-humid region, covers the processes adversely affecting productive capacity of land under different land use systems. Present paper reports the extent, type and severity of land degradation in south Asian countries. Impact of land degradation contributing factors including population and poverty, climate change and natural hazards, agriculture globalization, overgrazing and livestock, summer fallowing and inappropriate land use management are discussed.

It has long been felt that our natural environment should be mapped and monitored with active participation of agencies responsible for managing natural resources, industry groups and community organizations. This organized information forms a basis for storing soil and land databases for the implementation and monitoring of various efforts on land resource management.

This new ICAR study finds that the degraded and wastelands in the country cover 120.4 M ha. It provides a new dimension for their rehabilitation and implementation of developmental plans can be streamlined using this study.
