Ahmedabad: While shifting the Asiatic lions from critically endangered species category to endangered species in its Red List, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) at the same time has also cautioned the forest department against poaching threats to the species.

The IUCN Red List report stated that the subpopulation of lions is increasing and is considered stable now in Gujarat. The number of lions is also reported to be spreading beyond the boundaries of the protected sanctuary of Gir to satellite townships.

IUCN Shifts Asiatic Lions From Critical Category To Endangered Species

Ahmedabad: The roar of Asiatic lions in Gujarat just got louder. The conservation efforts of the state are now reflected not just in the growing numbers of the big cats but also in the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Birds Continue To Fall Prey Despite Arrest Of 9 Men

Ahmedabad: The forest department claimed to have cracked the case of the poaching of 64 lesser flamingos in Venasar village in the Little Rann of Kutch when its officials arrested nine people on January 4. They had even recovered the nets used to trap the birds, after TOI had reported the massacre.

Ahmedabad: The dead flamingos found in Venasar village were not the work of some desperately poor man’s attempt to feed his family. Given the fact that such a large number of birds were killed just before December 31, government officials fear that the massacre was ordered for a party to ring in the New Year. Someone apparently wanted to impress his guests by serving flamingo meat as a delicacy.

Ahmedabad: The rapid infrastructure development taking place in Kutch is not the only threat to the Great Indian Bustard (GIB) and the conservation efforts to protect them. The domestic and stray animals are also affecting the conservation efforts, say findings of the study — published as guidelines by the Union ministry of environment and forests for the Great Indian Bustard recovery programme. Kutch has a population of around 50 GIBs in the area.

Ahmedabad: Winged visitors from Siberia, the Greater Flamingos, will get warning signals in form of reflectors while flying at night through hightension power transmission lines in the Khadir region of the Greater Rann of Kutch. The Gujarat Energy Transmission Company (Getco) on Friday began taking corrective measures after The Times of India reported on the death of scores of these birds along a recently electrified cable line.

Move Comes After TOI Report On 400 Flamingo Deaths

Ahmedabad:Insulate high tension cables or put them underground when they run close to the breeding grounds of the migratory Greater Flamingos in the Khadir region of Kutch. The state forest and environment department issued this order to the Gujarat Energy Transmission Company (Getco) on Thursday, after TOI reported that 400 flamingos had been killed here in the past 10 days because they came in contact with the cables.
