New Delhi The Supreme Court on Friday asked former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa and the country's third-largest steel producer, JSW Steel, to file documents to prove their innocence in the Karnataka mining scam.

The court said it will pass an order next week on the Central Empowered Committee's (CEC) recommendations, seeking a CBI probe into the alleged massive illegal mining activities in Karnataka and the roles of Yeddyurappa and two companies — JSW Steel and Adani Enterprises — in the scandal.

A bench headed by Justice HL Dattu is likely to hear the matter on March 2. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, had on January 24 granted final approval to the deal.

New Delhi The Supreme Court on Thursday cleared decks for the NTPC’s R29,700-crore investment plan by upholding the central utility’s decision to disqualify Ansaldo Caldaie from bidding for the bulk supply of 660 mw super-critical boilers.

The state-owned power generator was unable to award the contract that included 11 supercritical boilers and an equal number of supercritical turbines of 660 mw each, to be built locally, pending the disposal of the matter by the apex court.

Essar Power (EPL) has moved the Supreme Court seeking to set aside the demand of around R400 crore raised by Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation (GETCO) for transmission and wheeling of electricity from Essar Steel’s (ESL) captive power plants to its steel and power plants.

The issue before the court relates to the ownership of a bus-bar (a part of electrical installations), which is a 400-metre line connected to a 220 kv transmission line leading to GETCO’s Ichhapur and Sachin substations. The petitions filed by both ESL and EPL will come up for hearing in December.

New Delhi In a major relief to Sterlite Industries, the Supreme Court on Tuesday stuck to its earlier stay order against the immediate closure of the company’s copper smelting plant at Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu. The closure was directed by the Madras High Court.

The HC had in September last year asked the London-listed Vedanta group company to shut down its plant and pay compensation to its workers for not complying with environmental norms.

New Delhi In a setback to PepsiCo India Holdings, the Supreme Court on Monday upheld the Maharashtra government’s decision to impose higher charges for water used for manufacturing of soft drinks by the company.

A bench headed by Justice MK Sharma dismissed the Cola major’s petition alleging that the MIDC had arbitrarily increased water charges in 2001 for the industrial consumers in the state who use water as a raw material.
