Jayalalithaa reverses DMK regime’s decision on the 1,600-megawatt project

Reversing the previous Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government's decision on the 1,600-megawatt (MW) Udangudi super critical thermal power project, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Friday announced that her government would implement it as a State sector project, ensuring the availability of the entire power generated to the State.

The authorities are planning to invoke emergency clause of the Land Acquisition Act for acquiring land for the proposed drinking water reservoir in Thervai Kandigai of the Tiruvallur district.

The reservoir is meant for the drinking water supply to Chennai with a capacity to hold water up to one thousand million cubic feet (TMC). A total of about 1,250 acres of land is required, of which 560 acres belong to the government. The private land will be around 700 acres.

Authorities giving final touches to draft document

The Tamil Nadu government has proposed to revise its water policy with a renewed focus on conservation and groundwater regulation.
Authorities are giving final touches to the draft water policy document, which will be referred to the Cabinet for approval. Subsequently, it will be made available in the public domain to seek the comments of stakeholders. After modification, if necessary, it will be adopted by the government, according to a senior official.

It will be taken under rural employment guarantee scheme

The State Rural Development Department has planned to remove encroachment on scores of water bodies, falling under its jurisdiction, and restore the storage of the water bodies to their original capacity.

Chief Minster Jayalalithaa has given approval to the ETPS (Ennore Thermal Power Station) Replacement Project of 600 megawatt (MW), setting the process formally for the closure of the four-decade-old ETPS.

A few days ago, the Chief Minister's nod was obtained for the project, according to an official. The proposed plant will be established, using state-of-the-art technology.

The State government has sanctioned nearly Rs. 470 crore towards the extension of the special public distribution system, under which pulses, edible oil and other condiments are given at subsidised prices.

The tenure of the special PDS is to expire on Saturday (December 31). The supply of pulses and other condiments has been extended by three more months and that of edible oil by nine months, according to a government official.

Aiming at a higher level of sustainable economic growth, four per cent growth rate in agriculture and promoting rapid growth in the manufacturing sector are among the broad objectives of the State government during the 12th Five Year Plan (2012-2017), which will begin in April next, according the draft approach paper prepared by the State Planning Commission (SPC).
