The Narendra Modi government's bid to generate funds to promote clean energy by introducing a Green Cess on every unit of conventional electricity generated in the state has not gone well with major industrial players of the state, who have now challenged the constitutional validity of the government's move in the Gujarat High Court.

Acting on the individual petitions by the companies the High Court has restrained the state government from initiating any proceedings or recover any amounts by way of cess on generation of electricity from the petitioners till June 15, when the next hearing in the matters was scheduled.

India on Wednesday signed the gas sale purchase agreement (GSPA) for the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (Tapi) gas pipeline, which upon completion would diversify its gas basket. With domestic gas output stagnating, the $7.6-billion Tapi gas project provides a ray of hope.

In five years, the country would have access to imported natural gas, in addition to imported liquefied natural gas and domestic sources, including coal bed methane gas.

Files fresh notification under the Cyprus treaty unperturbed by fall in CIL stock’s dollar value

UK-based hedge fund The Children’s Investment Fund (TCI) has dropped the charges against the environment and forests ministry from its legal proceedings under the India-Cyprus investment treaty. In March, it had initiated legal proceedings against the government of India under the treaty, after the coal ministry did not respond to its concerns over coal pricing and management of state-run Coal India Ltd (CIL). While the government owns 90 per cent in CIL, TCI holds a little over one per cent.

Power companies have refused to ink fuel supply pacts with the miner due to insertion of new clauses

The Coal Ministry has asked Coal India to examine issues, including changes in penalty clause, raised by the power producers regarding the model fuel supply agreement. The move comes against the backdrop of NTPC and many power companies refusing to ink fuel supply pacts with Coal India Ltd (CIL), disagreeing with introduction of new clauses.

Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), a statutory body under the Union ministry of power, is planning to save 2,308 Mw of energy worth around Rs 11,540 crore during the 12th Five Year Plan (2012-17) by mandating the labelling of electronic products. Of this, 400 Mw, worth Rs 2,000 crore, is expected to be saved from the air-conditioners segment.

The central government has already mandated four products – split air-conditioners, fluorescent lamps, transformers and frost-free refrigerators – under the energy efficiency star-labelling to reduce energy consumption, and identified 10 products on a voluntary basis.

Plans to use UID cards to reach out to beneficiaries, following successful pilot project in Alwar, Rajasthan

The government said today that it planned to provide direct subsidy to beneficiaries of kerosene oil and a pilot project in this regard in Alwar district of Rajasthan was yielding good results. "Direct subsidy on kerosene is planned in future...We have to move towards it. It will be done using UID cards... We are benefiting from the pilot project," Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas RPN Singh said in the Rajya Sabha.
