New Delhi: It’s a problem of plenty for dairy companies. Left with excess inventory of skimmed milk powder owing to the good monsoon in the last two years, dairy majors say growth will be hit this year, with most of them expecting lower profit margins compared to last year. India, which is the largest producer of milk in the world, currently has an excess of nearly 1.5 lakh tonnes of skimmed milk powder. Companies demand lifting of ban on exports of skimmed milk powder (SMP), which the government had imposed last year to tackle supply shortage.

Mumbai: The BMC has floated a Rs 121 crore proposal to buy flavoured milk for civic schools. To prevent any delays, the BMC plans to buy the milk directly from dairies rather than going through dealers in the market. The proposal is likely to be placed before the standing committee, which is scheduled to meet early this week.

SHILLONG, May 10 – The Central Silk Board (CSB) and State Space Application Centres has taken up a project to extend the silk cultivation area in the State to meet the growing demand of silk in the country thereby provide employment in the rural areas of the State. The current demand for silk is 30,000 ton but the country produces about 23000 ton, according to the CSB. The board is trying to extend the cultivation of silk in non-traditional areas like Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, etc.

The Supreme Court Wednesday issued notice to the central and five state governments on a petition seeking complete curb on the sale and supply of synthetic and adulterated milk and its products like ghee, khoya and paneer. An apex court bench headed by Chief Justice S.H. Kapadia issued notice on a petition by Swamy Achuthananda Tirth seeking direction to the centre and state governments to ensure the supply of healthy, hygienic and natural milk and milk products.

New Delhi: Excessive use of plastic bags and their unregulated disposal has been choking lakes, ponds and sewage systems, the Supreme Court said on Monday while warning that it posed a threat more serious than the atom bomb for the next generation. This observation from a bench of Justices G S Singhvi and S J Mukhopadhaya came on a PIL filed by two Andhra based NGOs drawing the court’s attention to 30-60kg of plastic bags recovered from the stomachs of cows because of irresponsible disposal of plastic bags and a defunct municipal waste collection system.

WASHINGTON: Per capita meat consumption need to be halved by 2050 in the developed world if the emission of nitrous oxide (N2O), one of the most important greenhouse gases, is to be curbed, as set out by the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). This is the finding from a new study, which also claims that N2O emissions from the industrial and agricultural sectors will also need to be cut by 50 percent if targets are to be met.

The first ‘wool bank’ in the North East is likely to be set up here in the capital city of Meghalaya with the Central Wool Development Board (CWDB) and Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) working towards it in coordination with the State Government, officials said today. “Meghalaya has a great potential in this regard like other Northeastern States and we deserve to have wool industry or bank in different States of the region,” Deputy Chief Minister BM Lanong said while speaking at a round table discussion on creation of wool bank in NE States.
