Research centre to boost fish seed production in State

Shillong: With an aim to enhance fish seed production and impart knowledge to the farmers of the state on modern technology of aquaculture especially breeding technique, the Fisheries department has come up with a full- fledged research centre at Ri Bhoi which will be inaugurated on Thursday.

The first of its kind in the State, the Mawpun farm-cum-research centre at Ri Bhoi is expected to enhance the fish seed production with a target of about 25 lakh fries. It will be a demonstration centre to all fish farmers for breeding, feeding and the like.

Rural fish farming project aims big catch!

KOCHI: The ambitious ‘Matsya Samrudhi’ project, mooted in a bid to shore up fish production levels in the rural belts of the state, will be launched in June this year. The state government-sponsored project will jointly be implemented by the Fish Farmers Development Agency, Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana and the Agency for the Development of Aquaculture Kerala (ADAK).

The `195-crore project targets to increase the production by one lakh tonnes within a period of three years. The project is expected to make the state coffer richer by `481.5 crore.

Vulnerability of the Sundarbans ecosystem

Ecological diversity in Sunderban is at the threshold of decline. The fragile land here is being swallowed every day by gradual sea level rise, coastal erosion and tropical cyclones. Besides the global cause of sea level rise i.e. thermal expansion of sea water also responsible is the land degrading anthropogenic activity. An unsustainable situation has crept in the deltaic plain when natural capital is being used up faster than it can be replenished.

Meghalaya state aquaculture mission 2012-2017

The Government of Meghalaya has identified fisheries as a key sector and has decided to launch the Meghalaya State Aquaculture Mission (MSAM) co-terminus with the Twelfth Five Year Plan period (2012-13 to 2016-17). The MSAM has the following major objectives: Development of existing water bodies and creation of additional water area for large scale fish production, including reclamation/rehabilitation of marshy and swampy lands; Conservation of native, endangered and traditional species of Meghalaya and developing breeding farms of commercially potential species on a large scale;

Fisheries and aquaculture in India: An appraisal of their multiple dimensions

Traditionally, India was recognized as a fish-eating country, but it was only after Independence that fishery has been recognized as an important allied sector of Indian agriculture. Over ten-fold increase in fish production-from 0.75 million tonnes in 1950-51 to 8.0 million tonnes in 2009-10 amply justifies vibrancy of this sector that has been exhibited in the country during the last six decades.

Umkhen river to be recognised as fish conservation area

SHILLONG: The Khasi-Jaintia Ri-Bhoi Border Fish Protection Committee (KJRBFPC) including the KSU Mawryngkneng Circle has decided to recognize Umkhen River as a Fish Conservation Area.

The decision came after a meeting held by the KSU Mawryngkneng Circle and the KJRBFPC including the Rangbah Shnong of villages located near the river at Thadrang, Ri-Bhoi District recently.

Marine protected areas: country case studies on policy, governance and institutional issues

This Fisheries and Aquaculture Technical Paper presents case studies of the policy, governance and institutional issues of marine protected areas in Brazil, India, Palau and Senegal. It is the first of four in a global series of case studies on marine protected areas (MPAs). An initial volume provides an analysis and synthesis of all the studies. The set of global MPA case studies was designed to close a deficit in information on the governance of MPAs and spatial management tools, within both fisheries management and biodiversity conservation contexts.

Cabinet nod to M’laya Aquaculture Mission

SHILLONG: The State Cabinet on Tuesday approved the ambitious Meghalaya Aquaculture Mission aimed at enhancing fish production in the State.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday after the Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma informed that the Meghalaya Aquaculture Mission would be launched on March 5.
