Silchar: Pollution Control Board, Assam had instructed Vivekananda Speciality Hospital and Research Centre at Chitta Ranjan Avenue, here to stop its all activities immediately as the Centre had violated the provisions of the law in force causing pollution to the environment and in exercising of power conferred upon it under Section 33 (A) of Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 and as amended provisions of Bio-medical Waste (Management Handling ) Rules, 1998.

MINISTER OF State for Environment and Forests Jayanthi Natarajan could land in a soup in the Lok Sabha for breach of privilege, for no fault of hers. On 29 August, in a written reply on the status of bio-medical waste in India, she submitted incorrect data — statistical evidence supplied by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) for the past three years. Collating data from all the states, it claims that India treats more than 70 percent of the bio-medical waste it generates. If only it were true.

Bio-medical waste constitutes an estimated 1.5 to 2 per cent of municipal waste in the urban areas of India. The Bio-Medical Waste Rules-1998 have been in place for the past 13 years but there are various challenges in the implementation of the system, some being lack of capacity among generators and regulators, inadequate infrastructure and finance.

NOIDA: The city's first government multispecialty hospital, constructed at a massive cost of Rs 150 crore, doesn't have sufficient facilities for disposal of bio-waste or a morgue. Touted as Mayawati's dream project, the hospital caters to more than 2,000 people every day, yet patients run the risk of contracting serious illness due to inadequate managing of medical waste. Hospital authorities admit that even though so much money was spent in the construction of the hospital, the lack of a mortuary within the premises is a logistical nightmare for them.

In a major environment-friendly move, the Delhi government will impose a blanket ban on usage and manufacturing of plastic bags in the next two months and those violating it could face imprisonment up to five years and fine of up to Rs 1 lakh or both.

The ban is being imposed under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 under which storage as well as sale of plastic bags will be considered an offence.
