A laboratory scale hybrid-UASB reactor was used for the treatment of sugar industry waste water fabricated from acrylic pipe of 100 mm external diameter and 90 mm internal diameter.

The Bagmati loses its way in Kathmandu amid political vacuum and urban chaos. The chaos and urban sprawl of today’s Kathmandu have taken a serious toll on the stretch of the Bagmati and its tributaries that meet in the city. In the absence of clear guidelines regulating river water use and diversion, the city extracts some 30 million litres of water each day from this seasonal river to quench its thirst, even in the dry season.

Effluent samples were collected from a tannery in Ambur, near North Arcot Dist, Tamil Nadu, India. The physico-chemical parameters of the effluent viz, colour, odour, pH, Electrical conductivity, TSS, TDS, BOD, COD, total hardness, calcium hardness, magnesium hardness, chloride, sulphate and total chromium were determined. The results revealed that almost all the parameters of Tannery Effluent were found to be high and exceeding the CPCB limits.

Anaerobic digestion offers a unique treatment option for the dairy industry. Not only does anaerobic digestion reduce the COD of an effluent, but little microbial biomass is produced.

Physico-chemical parameters of treated effluent were found within permissible levels of statutory limits.
