The government cleared a slew of infrastructure projects in the power and the oil and gas sectors on Monday, entailing investments to the tune of over Rs 58,000 crore.

In the backdrop of a persistent power crisis and raging coal scam, Greenpeace released its assessment report on Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) titled “Powering Ahead with Renewables: Leaders and Laggards”, which ranks performance of all the states on renewable energy supply and calls for revision of RPO mechanism based on equity principle.

Ministries of coal & power have sided with PSU power utilities

The much-touted plan to optimally distribute the higher cost of imported coal among power producers via a price-pooling mechanism with cheaper domestic coal may go haywire. While a host of large upcoming private power projects would have increased their viability under the proposed regime, two key administrative ministries — those of power and coal — have virtually sided with public-sector power utilities, who fear losing their current cost advantage if price-pooling is implemented.

The government was all for creating a viable and competitive domestic production base and incentivise use of clean energy in the country, Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia said at the fourth Clean Energy Ministerial here on Wednesday.

Efforts were on to encourage domestic production and usage. “We are interested in incentivising the use of clean energy. We are also interested in creating a viable and competitive domestic production base,” he said.

Expansion plan to cost Rs 11,547 cr, to add 1,320 Mw capacity

The Odisha government has approved construction and installation of the third and fourth units by state-owned Odisha Power Generation Corporation (OPGC) at its Ib valley plant near Jharsuguda. The two new units will add 1,320 Mw capacity to OPGC's existing power station at the site which has an installed capacity of 420 Mw.
