KENDRAPARA: Emergence of millions of baby Olive Ridley marine turtles along the tranquil Gahirmatha beach has brought cheers to conservationists here.
Wildlife lovers are elated as hatchlings broke out of eggshells and began their seaward journey from the nesting grounds at Nasi-2 Island. About 1.68 lakh turtles had arrived at Nasi-2 nesting ground from March 20 to March 28 to lay eggs on the sandy beach.

Ecological diversity in Sunderban is at the threshold of decline. The fragile land here is being swallowed every day by gradual sea level rise, coastal erosion and tropical cyclones. Besides the global cause of sea level rise i.e. thermal expansion of sea water also responsible is the land degrading anthropogenic activity. An unsustainable situation has crept in the deltaic plain when natural capital is being used up faster than it can be replenished.

Beaches along most of the shorelines of the world, exhibit variations in their geometric form over different time scales in response to the prevailing dynamic forces due to waves, tides and associated currents. The periods and intensity of erosion and accretion alternate over time and are generally coupled to nearshore wave conditions. The nearshore parameters, viz. wave runup, wave setup and wave energy, have been evaluated during storm and normal conditions of SW monsoon (June-September) and NE monsoon (November-February) by empirical parameterization along the Visakhapatnam coast.

This report is intended to provide an overview of the concept of ecosystem approach to disaster risk reduction (Eco-DRR), natural resource management and disaster linkages, incorporating Eco-DRR concepts in various phases of disaster management, including post disaster recovery in wide range of human and natural environmental settings. The case studies cover coastal, mountain and urban ecosystems and specific hydro-meteorological risks like floods, forest fire, epidemics and landslides.

A large number of eggs of Olive Ridley turtles were destroyed due to sea erosion in the mouth of Rushikulya river in Odisha’s Ganjam district where the endangered sea species nest.

“We think around 10 to 20 per cent of eggs were washed away due to the sea erosion,” divisional forest officer, Berhampur AK Jena said.

Around 1.06 lakh eggs were laid by Olive Ridley sea turtles in the Rushikulya river mouth, one of the nesting sites in the state in February.

Very few Olive Ridley turtles had nested in the place, where largescale sea erosion was taking place, DFO said.

As many as 12 of Britain's 19 civil nuclear sites are at risk of flooding and coastal erosion because of climate change, according to an unpublished government analysis obtained by the Guardian .

Nine of the sites have been assessed by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) as being vulnerable now, with others in danger from rising sea levels and storms in future decades.

Small dams will not be sustainable in the NE region. Multipurpose projects with very safe designs of medium to big dams on the tributaries of the Brahmaputra will be an unavoidable option in the days to come.

This is the opinion of renowned water resources expert Prof Nayan Sarma of the IIT, Roorkee. He was speaking to The Assam Tribune.

A special beach nourishment project to recreate the coastline has been introduced by the Coast Conservation Department (CCD) for the first time in Sri Lanka to combat coastal erosion, CCD Deputy Director (Planning) Gamini Hewage told the Daily News..
He noted that a one km coastal stretch from Palliyawatte to Uswetakeyyawa had initially been selected to carry out this project.
Under this project, sand pumped from the deep sea will be used to fill the coastline recreating the beach. This is done using a sand pump vessel.
