The National Green Tribunal has agreed to hear a plea challenging the November 9, 2012 environment clearance (EC) granted to Lavasa Corporation Ltd for its $ 31 billion hillside township project in Pune district of Maharashtra.

The Tribunal directed Lavasa, the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) and Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) to file their replies to the petition of a project-hit Pune native before July 24.

The National Green Tribunal, under the aegis of ministry of environment and forests, on Wednesday cancelled the environmental clearances granted to the 2,640MW coal-fired power project of Nagarjuna Construction Company coming up at Sompeta in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh. The . 14,000-crore thermal power project, to come up in two phases of 1,320MW each, has been hanging in fire for nearly two years following violent protests by locals against the project that led to three people getting killed in police firings in July 2010.

Construction companies in Beijing will need to keep a close eye on emissions of dust and other forms of pollution at their existing construction sites if they want to bid on new projects, a city government official said Tuesday.

It was announced at a Tuesday "green construction" conference that Beijing authorities will ban construction companies from submitting bids for new projects for a period of six months if their existing projects are found to have "irregularities," including large amounts of dust emissions and spilled construction materials.

An affordable housing policy is in the works to attract developers and to meet the shortage of around 25 million houses in the country. The Union Budget had announced access to external commercial borrowing (ECB) for affordable housing but the industry wasn't excited due to low margins in this category. Now, the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation (Mhupa) is in the process of framing an affordable housing policy, expected to be finalised in two months.

AHMEDABAD: A day after the Gujarat high court held all constructions at the Adani Port & Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) in Kutch illegal in absence of environment clearance, the same bench on Thursday stayed construction activities in 7,000 hectare area. However, this halt order is conditional and temporary.

A PIL was filed by advocate Hashim Qureshi claiming that the Kutch district collector on July 15, 2005, allotted 7,000 hactare land in a single day by passing 26 orders simultaneously for the purpose of development of SEZ.

People forced to leave their vehicles on the road because of lack of parking space in commercial/residential buildings will soon be able to drive to higher floors and park safely.

The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority has recommended to the State government to permit multi-level parking in all buildings. The decision to relax rules regarding development of parking space was taken following a representation by the Confederation of Real Estate Developers' Associations of India-Tamil Nadu.

The Gujarat High Court on Wednesday stayed construction and further development activities by all units in the Adani Group-owned Mundra Port Special Economic Zone (now Adani Port Special Economic Zone (APSEZ)) in Mundra taluka of Kutch district, till environmental clearance is granted by the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF).

The directions were issued on a public interest litigation (PIL) filed last year by villagers of Navinal village in Mundra opposing construction, and other developmental activities that changes the landscape, topography or geography, within land and area of APSEZ.

Chairman of Sri Lanka Geological Survey and Mines Bureau Dr. N.P. Wijayananda says that the bureau is inspecting the sand of a newly found sand mine for its suitability for construction industry before it is issued to the market.

The sand deposit has been found in a land belonged to the Irrigation Department in Galoya area in the Polonnaruwa district.

Sand will be mined following tests and it is expected the deposit will help control price of sand in the construction industry market.

The price of sand has gone drastically up in Sri Lanka due to shortage of supply.
