Now metal traps and snares, and not fire arms are latest threats to tigers and wildlife from poachers. The two-day meet of wildlife officials that concluded on Thursday has sounded red alert in all tiger reserves of the country stressing on armed patrolling as the need of the hour.

On the lines of e-monitoring in Corbett, certain tiger reserves as the Sunderbans in West-Bengal have called for installation of similar systems. The meeting also took a review of the status of Phase-4 monitoring that began in November last year.

The Nainital district administration and Corbett National Park authorities have started work to raise awareness among owners of resorts around Corbett regarding the recent Government order banning sound amplification in resorts within 500 metres of the national park. It is worth mentioning here that following a directive of the Uttarakhand High Court on a Public Interest Litigation filed by a local NGO, the State Government had ordered a ban on sound amplification in resorts within a specific area around Corbett in April this year.

Allowing setting up of a stone crusher in Terai-West forest division’s Kamola area seems to have come as a major setback not only for conservation of wildlife and flora and fauna but also for the agriculture sector . Among other natural sites, the famous Corbett Fall also falls in the same area. Besides, eco-tourism department also runs its activities here.

NEW DELHI: With poachers posing a massive threat to tigers in India, the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) has launched a pilot project in Uttarakhand's Corbett National Park for round-the-clock surveillance of the park using high definition cameras. The project E-eye (electronic eye) is a software-based system where 10 high resolution thermal and infrared cameras mounted on a tower are spread across the 350 sq km area of the park that falls in a highly sensitive zone bordering Uttar Pradesh.

A special Tiger Protection Force (TPF) will be set up in the Rajaji National Park soon. The force will focus on the protection and security of tigers in the National Park and will be dedicated in solving cases of wildlife offenses, including those against tigers in the park, officials said. The State Forest Department had already sent a proposal about the TPF to the Central Government and is waiting for a nod. Senior officials said that the TPF will be set up as soon as the Central Government gives its go ahead for the same.

NEW DELHI: Highlighting the importance of the Kosi river corridor in the Corbett tiger reserve in Uttarakhand, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) said Sunday that the crucial pathway is facing a threat from upcoming resorts and hotels. Recent photos taken in the corridor, situated in the Terai Arc Landscape (TAL) at the heart of which lies the Corbett tiger reserve, have shown as many as 13 tigers using the pathway.

Following disclosure of blatant violation of Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, Project Elephant guidelines and mistreatment of private captive elephants around the Corbett national park, the State Animal Husbandry department conducted a medical check-up of these elephants.

The latest death of a tiger in a territorial fight has once again brought focus on the need for expanding the area under the purview of the Corbett Tiger Reserve.
The Ministry of Environment and Forests had recommended that parts of the Ramnagar and Lansdowne forest divisions should be included in the buffer zone of Corbett, but the State Government is adamant that this will be facilitated only after the Union Government facilitates construction of the Kandi Road which passes through the Corbett and Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary and links Garhwal with Kumaon.
