A minister in Ivory Coast has been sacked over his alleged role in the disappearance of millions of dollars meant for victims of pollution.

Adama Bictogo says he has not done anything wrong.

The case relates to a 2006 incident in which thousands became ill after toxic waste was dumped in Abidjan.

Multinational Trafigura, which shipped it, denied any wrongdoing but made a series of payments in relation to the case without admitting liability.

DIPHU: The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA), was introduced with an objective to provide legal guarantee of 100 days of wage in a financial year to every rural household, whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work at the minimum wage rate as has been prescribed for agricultural labour in the State.

However, instead of helping the poor in their uplift, MNREGA has become a boon for the officials and politicians in Karbi Anglong. They spare no stone unturned to loot public money with both hands

Contrary to a common belief that India’s public distribution system is irreparably dysfunctional, a nine-state survey of the pds finds that the respondents received 84-88% of their full entitlement. The implicit subsidy for households below the poverty line from pds foodgrains alone is roughly equivalent, in many states, to a week’s nrega wages every month. The revival of the pds can be traced, in large part, to a renewed political interest which manifests itself in state initiatives such as expanded coverage, reduced prices, computerisation of stock management, etc.

Why is it that the Anna Hazare-led movement against corruption does not seek to have the Lokpal cover NGOs, corporate houses and the corporate media?

Government officials and functionaries still shudder at the name of Fatehpura taluka in Dahod, a tribal district in Gujarat. In August 2010, India’s first union of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) workers, called the Rashtriya Rojgar Khatri Kamdaronu Kayda Union (RRKKKU), had exposed a massive scam in which Rs 4.18 crores of NREGA money had been siphoned.

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) is faced with the catch-22 situation after the National Accountability Bureau has raised 22 objections on the transparency of the Rs.6.5 billion LED streetlights project. “We raised 22 objections on the tendering process as well as CDA’s objectives behind launching this multibillion rupees project,” said NAB Spokesman Zafar Iqbal.

With the Union Cabinet not taking up the much-anticipated amendments in the Lokpal Bill on Thursday, the fate of the anti-corruption legislation is now in a limbo. UPA strategists had earlier decided to bring a couple of amendments in the legislation and place it for passage in the Rajya Sabha after getting the Cabinet approval, but some points of disagreements still remain.

Incriminating documents seized, says investigating agency

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted searches on the premises of former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa, members of his family, Prerana Education Trust run by them and two mining companies in Bangalore, Shimoga and Bellary in the early hours of Wednesday.

The raids were part of a probe ordered by the Supreme Court into allegations of corruption against Yeddyurappa. The raiding teams also searched the house of former Muzrai Minister ES Krishnaiah Setty.

LUCKNOW: Facing flak for the tardy pace of investigation in the NRHM scam, the CBI has demanded for extra hands to help it cope up with the work pressure. In a letter sent to DGP UP last Monday, its Delhi headquarters has requested additional "manpower and material" in view of the magnitude of the NRHM scam which covers practically all districts and thousands of government employees, politicians, and middlemen.

A study on irrigation projects across the state has exposed corruption to the tune of Rs26,000 crore in the sector in the last decade. The irrigation ministry says the total expenditure in the past 10 years has not exceeded Rs42,000 crore. However, the budget approved shows the expenditure as Rs70,000 crore. This means Rs26,000 crore under ‘plan and non-plan budget’ is unaccounted for. Also, successive governments often diverted funds from other departments to the irrigation department.
