Arrangements are in place to initiate a prawn farming project in the Batticaloa district which will help in receiving a good export revenue. Earlier there was a better income from prawn farming carried out in the Puttalam district. It was destroyed due to wrong decisions and following informal methods, Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Minister Dr.Rajitha Senaratne said.
The minister was addressing the opening ceremony of the brackish water prawn breeding centre built in Puthukudirippu, Batticaloa.

The tidal surge that engulfed most part of the district, washed out 1717 shrimp farms of the districts and submerged about 50,000 ponds of the district.
