BHUBANESWAR: The Government is all set to explore energy efficient and renewable energy mechanisms for its public transport system in the Capital and other cities included under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) phase II of which is scheduled to go underway from 2014. Electricity and solar powered buses could be introduced to make the public transport system more environment friendly and reduce carbon footprints in the cities, Commissioner, Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation, Vishal Dev said here on Thursday.

China produces electricity for its burgeoning economy with its ample coal reserves. A full 80 percent comes from coal-burning power plants, and new plants are being constructed all the time. The country's reliance on coal power, while causing very dirty pollution, also has an interesting side effect. It takes away the "greenness" of electric vehicles. A new study from a team of University of Tennessee researchers has found that the power generated to fuel electric cars produces much greater emissions of particulate matter (PM) than gasoline-powered cars.

The Private Bus Owners Association of Sri Lanka yesterday vowed that that they would campaign against the Vehicle Emission Testing Programme (VET)unless the Petroleum Ministry took steps to produce diesel with low Sulphur levels.

The VET programme was jointly implemented by the Environment and Natural Resources and Transport Ministry in 2007 to reduce dangerous gases that cause air pollution.

Although commuters are exposed to high air pollution concentrations, little quantitative information currently exists on differences in exposure from different modes of transport, routes, and fuel types. Zuurbier et al. (p.

Pune In a new twist to the bus purchase saga, the Central Government has opposed the proposal of the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) to purchase 200 low-floor CNG-run buses and asked it to go for diesel-run buses instead, saying the CNG-bus manufacturers would not be able to supply the buses in time.

Modern High School has decided to toe the green line drawn by Calcutta High Court and take five old buses off the road from August 1.

Supreme Court on Tuesday assigned federal and provincial environment departments the task of exploring a way out for providing financial assistance to the owners wherever needed for conversion of 'carbon emitting' buses and auto rickshaws into environment friendly vehicles running on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as fuel.

New Delhi: With vehicles in the city increasing at an exponential rate, Delhi is witnessing a rollback of benefits it accrued from conversion to CNG a few years ago.
