Exploring the prospects of the ecosystem services approach for natural resource management and poverty alleviation in India, this paper points out that it is vital to have an understanding of the political economy of negotiations over natural resource use. An appreciation of the synergies and trade-offs between ecosystem services is equally important to develop better strategies for pro-poor ecosystem management.

Punjab government is now rushing to launch Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal’s pet project—Medicity at Mullanpur—before the electoral code of conduct is put into place. But, the fact is that this town, which shot into limelight when the Congress celebrated 75 years of the Dandi March in 2005 by re-staging it from Ahmedabad to Dandi, still needs a facelift.

With an aim to rejuvenate Gandhian principles and values and to immortalise the historical salt march undertaken by the Mahatma in March-April 1930, the UPA government has launched a unique Rs 25-crore green project for Dandi and the surrounding villages to transform the area into an eco-friendly tourist destination.
