Allows Mining In Country’s Best Sal Forest, Elephant Reserve In Jharkhand

New Delhi: The environment ministry’s statutory expert panel, the Forest Advisory Committee (FAC), has bypassed its rules and earlier orders to clear iron mining projects by three private firms in the country’s best sal forest and the core zone of the elephant reserve in the Saranda forest division of Jharkhand.

The State government has officially declared a part of the Kollegala Range Forest as Male Mahadeshwara Wildlife Sanctuary. Off the 1,224 sqkm of the Range forest, 906.18 sqkm (90,618.75 hectares) has been declared as sanctuary.

Jorhat, May 8: A Karbi village is about to script history by relocating for the sake of elephants.

The presence of Indian Bison has been recorded in the UNESCO World Heritage Site Kaziranga National Park (KNP) in Assam after over 30 years, much to the cheers of wildlife conservationists and park officials.

KNP director NK Vasu said a huge male Indian Bison was clicked by camera traps installed in the park to monitor the tiger population. The Bison was recorded by camera traps located in the Bagori range of the park.

A committee set up by the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) to probe the death of five elephants in Orissa's Ganjam district due to a speeding train has recommended that the Railways should restrict the speed of trains passing through identified vulnerable tracks in forests to a maximum 40 km per hour to prevent elephant deaths.

On the intervening night of December 29 and 30 last year, five elephants were mowed down by Coromondel Express, speeding at 110 km/hr near Subalaya in Ganjam district, when the herd was crossing the track. Incidentally, the accident occurred at the spot where the Railways had put up a warning signage of elephants crossing.

Keonjhar: After Similipal sanctuary in Mayurbhanj district, poachers now seem to be making inroads into the Hadagarh sanctuary. The fact came to light after wildlife division forest officials seized the carcass of three elephants, allegedly killed by tusk smugglers from Hadagarh wildlife sanctuary near Chakratirtha biodiversity area.

The forest department seized the carcass after interrogating five persons for their alleged involvement in the smuggling of tuskers. The department has seized about 12 kg tusks worth about Rs nine lakh from a house in Purunia village under Hadagarh forest range area on April 22.
