Restrains Centre from giving effect to nearly 25 provisions of the Legislation

The Madras High Court Bench here has restrained the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry and the Commissioner of Food Safety in Chennai from giving effect to certain provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and the regulations framed under it with respect to members of Madurai Managar Anaiththu Vanigargal Nala Sangam (MMAVNS), Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants Association (TNFMA), and Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (TNCCI).

Designated officer, 22 food safety officers appointed for district

Traders engaged in food business in the district were oriented to the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006 here on Thursday. Chairing the meeting, Collector Jayashree Muralidharan pointed out that the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006 had come into force across the country from August 5, 2011 and it was essential that all traders engaged in food business conformed to the provisions of the Act.

The Food and Drug Administration Department of Food Safety Directorate has fixed March 7 as the deadline for owners of roadside, small eateries and food vendors using pushcarts to fall in line with the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006 to ensure hygiene and food safety.

BHUBANESWAR: The two-day seminar on “Emerging trends in food production and safety” that concluded here on Sunday strongly urged the State Government to implement the Food Safety Act and post a senior officer as Food Safety Commissioner. An officer, not less than the rank of Secretary, should be posted as the Food Safety Commissioner, the experts unanimously agreed at the end of the seminar which was addressed by Health Secretary Anu Garg.

BHUBANESWAR: A two-day national seminar on food safety which aims at creating greater awareness on the Food Safety and Security Act (FSSA) commenced here on Saturday. The topic for the seminar was ‘Emerging trends’ in Food Production and Safety. Food Safety and Security Authority of India CEO VN Gaur spoke on the additional provisions in the Act that make it more powerful than the previous Acts on food safety.

Members of the Tamil Nadu Traders Federation would stage a demonstration in the city on February 2 against the Food Safety and Standards Act. A decision to this effect was taken at an urgent consultative meeting of office bearers of the federation held here on Sunday, according to Ve.Govindarajalu, state general secretary of the federation.

The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has expressed concern over Food Safety and Standards (FSS) Act 2006, which was notified and had been implemented from August 5, 2011, stating that it would only end up reviving the ‘licence raj.'

At a time when States such as Tamil Nadu had removed restrictions on stock limits, licensing requirements and transportation to ensure smooth flow of essential food commodities, the Chamber said that new Act made it mandatory for all food business operators from street vendors to dealers to register and obtain licences.

In a major step towards an effective implementation of the Food Safety and Standards Act, all hotels, eateries and road side food vendors have been asked to register their particulars with food safety officials at the office of the Deputy Director of Health Services in Viswanathapuram here.

J. Suguna, who has been appointed as the designated officer of food safety for Madurai district, has said on Sunday that the Food Safety Act will be strictly implemented in both urban and rural areas and officials now have now powers to enforce the rules.
