Food Safety & Standards Authority of India has developed Categorization of food products & Food Codes for all the products as covered under Chapter 2 of Food Safety & Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011 including some proprietary items. A table has been prepared clarifying the items covered under Central/State Licensing and registration.

An Act to enact the law relating to safety and standards of the food and to establish the Punjab Food Authority to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.

Diet experts have said Indians are consuming junk foods more often than in the past, and have warned that this poses a major risk to their health. Deputy Programme Manager at the Food Standards and Safety Authority of India (FSSAI) Savvy Soumya Mishra said that merely criticising international fast food chains for spoiling Indian dietary patterns is not enough. She said that fast food had reached rural markets in the form of potato chips and soft-drinks and wished remedial measures are taken.

The Government on Tuesday said that 68.4 per cent samples of milk tested last year were found to be non-conforming to the food safety regulations.

In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, the Health Minister, Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad, said, “in the National Survey conducted by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India in 2011, to ascertain the quality of liquid milk through the country, 68.4 per cent samples were found to be non-conforming to the Food Safety and Standards Regulations.”

The national survey was conducted to create awareness among the public, Mr Azad said.

India started exporting a small amount of honey in 1991-1992 and has now established itself as an important honey exporter to the world market. The quantity exported has increased substantially, and today India exports honey to 62 countries, including Germany, Saudi Arabia, the United States, and the United Kingdom. This publication documents studies on the policy and processes that enabled India to export honey to the international market. It shows how India has adopted the policies, processes, standards, and guidelines of the Codex Alimentarius and the European Directive on honey.

The standards for food products and additives have been prescribed in the Food Safety and Standards (Food Product Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011. These standards are substantially the same as were notified under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Rules 1955 which got repealed on 5th August, 2011. The standards have evolved over a period of time on the basis of contemporary data, scientific development and various other factors impinging on safety of the products and health of the consumer.
