Global forest resources assessment 2010

The most comprehensive assessment of the state of the world's forests published at the start of the latest biennial meeting of the FAO' Committee on Forestry and World Forest Week, in Rome. It examines the current status and recent trends for about 90 variables covering the extent, condition, uses and values of forests and other wooded land, with the aim of assessing all benefits from forest resources.

Strange fever claims 3 lives

The spread of a strange fever claimed three lives in Balehonnur and surrounding areas in past 15 days.

Meanwhile, a woman, who was suffering from fever, has been shifted to Mangalore for advance treatment. Patients here suffer from symptoms including high temperature, body pain and weakness. Those who died had experienced bleeding through nostrils before death.

Mountain pine beetle and forest carbon feedback to climate change

The mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins, Coleoptera: Curculionidae, Scolytinae) is a native insect of the pine forests of western North America, and its populations periodically erupt into large-scale outbreaks. During outbreaks, the resulting widespread tree mortality reduces forest carbon uptake and increases future emissions from the decay of killed trees.

Global forest resources assessment 2005: progress towards sustainable forest management

FRA 2005 examines current status and recent trends for about 40 variables, covering the extent, condition, uses and values of forests and other wooded land, with the aim of assessing all benefits from forest resources. In the main section of this report, results are presented according to six themes representing important elements of sustainable forest management: extent of forest resources, biological diversity, forest health and vitality, productive functions of forest resources, protective functions of forest resources, and socio-economic functions.
