New Delhi: The oil mafia has struck at the IOC depot at Shakurbasti causing heavy losses to the Northern Railways. The gang siphoned off thousands of litres of kerosene and diesel from tanks at the Indian Oil depot and replenished it with water.

This adulterated fuel was used by Northern Railway’s three most important divisions – Delhi, Ferozabad and Ambala – to run their engines and generators that power several stations and air-conditioned coaches.

A senior official of Ceylon Petroleum Corporation has said that so far no compensation has been paid to any of the vehicle owners whose vehicles got damaged due to the substandard fuel sold by the CPC, a local Sinhala language newspaper The Divaina reported.

The issue of the controversial stock of petrol commenced three months ago. The official said that more than 3,000 persons directly complained to the CPC regarding damage to their vehicles due to substandard petrol. More owners have informed about the damages to the corporation over the phone, he said.

The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) has selected 3,000 vehicle owners initially to be paid compensation for the damages caused by the substandard fuel distributed by the Corporation.

The tri-member committee appointed to look into the issue met yesterday and selected the claimants and the officials have now commenced to send letters to the recipients of compensation.

The selected claimants had submitted documents to prove the damages, CPC says.

Despite the government pledging not to repeat past mistakes, the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation continued to release substandard petrol to the market, the UNP alleged yesterday.

Dayasiri Jayasekera MP, told a news conference in Colombo that though the remaining stocks of contaminated petrol which had damaged nearly 10,000 vehicle engines had been withdrawn following public protests, it was now being mixed with new petrol stocks and sold to the dealers.

More than 1,000 motor vehicle owners had lodged complaints with the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) regarding their vehicle engines that had been damaged after using the low quality petrol, the Petroleum Minister said yesterday.

Minister Premajayantha said vehicle owners would be compensated after a special committee, which would be appointed to evaluate the complaints completed its work.
