GUWAHATI: A workshop on ‘National Environment Awareness Campaign, 2011-2012’ on the theme ‘Forests for sustainable livelihood’ was organized by Environmental Watch and Management Institute (EWMI) very recently with support from the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests.

The workshop stressed the need of proper management of waste disposal near the banks of wetlands and other water bodies. The programme was held at Chakardeo Deshbhakta Tarunram Phukan ME School near Deepar Beel. The programme was inaugurated by Bhupen Chandra Thakuria, head master of Chakardeo Deshbhakta Tarunram Phukan ME School by planting a Neem sapling.

Corporation team to study Chinese waste management methods. The solution to the city's garbage problem may come all the way from Shanghai with a team of Chennai Corporation officials visiting China this week.

The nine-day mission to hunt for suitable technology will cover visits to solid waste management facilities of cities in China with focus on technology adopted in Shanghai. The Chennai Corporation is likely to collect data on waste management in Shanghai in its pursuit of waste-to-energy facilities.

CHENNAI : Corporation wards which fall under Saidapet and Theyagaraya Nagar constituencies in South Chennai have been chosen by the civic body for a pilot project to cover dustbins.

The project envisions a better garbage disposal system for households in Chennai, by having garbage collected directly from the residents and dumped in large covered bins. This will eliminate the existing process of dumping trash in small dustbins occupying every nook and cranny of the city streets. Overflowing garbage bins and the unbearable stench emanating from them are also expected to be arrested.

Residents oppose use of garbage as filler material for platform

With the proposal for using garbage as filler material for platform construction at the Kochu Veli railway station also hitting the roadblock, the State government is now bringing the focus back on source-level waste treatment projects. The government is now considering a proposal to provide subsidy for hotels, chicken stalls, hospitals, private schools, and other institutions also for setting up independent waste-processing plants on their premises.

Executive District Officer (EDO) Imtiaz Ahmed Malik has said that the grand cleanliness campaign launched on April 26 to clean all Union Councils of Rawalpindi has concluded under which Municipal Services Department of City District Government cleaned 46 Union Councils.

Nearly 2800 tonnes garbage was lifted from all UCs of the city, he said and informed that 30 kilometers dirty water drain lines and small nullahs have also been cleared.

JAIPUR: When the state government is gearing up to promote the technology to produce fuel out of wastes, a similar arrangement in the city is failing due to alleged sapathy of Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) in providing solid waste to one of the private companies which has set up its plant here.

A private player has established an industry to process municipal solid waste on the outskirts of Jaipur to generate 130-140 tons of refuse derived fuel (RDF) out of 400-500 tons of waste per day.

A total of 31 multi-national companies on Thursday expressed interest in supplying suitable technology to the Chennai Corporation for its massive solid waste management initiative that includes remediation and scientific closure of the Perungudi and Kodungaiyur dumpyards.

Contractors stay away from projects citing lack of profit

It has been over four months since the government ordered the rejuvenation of four water bodies in the city suburbs. But, the project is yet to take off as no bidders have come forward so far. The Water Resources Department had issued a Government Order in December about desilting water bodies in Cholavaram, Nemam, Porur and Ayanampakkam to create additional storage that could used to supply water for the city.

Projects to improve infrastructure discussed at Vision-2020

With an eye on improving waste management in the city, the Mysore City Corporation (MCC) is planning to install a computer controlled chip in each house, which would indicate if garbage has been collected.
