The much-maligned diesel has a new moniker that is more impressive than its dirty fuel tag. In the Indian automobile market, diesel is king, and it is now the cheapest automobile fuel, edging out the green fuel CNG. These days, diesel works out cheaper than CNG. For instance, if you calculate the operating cost of CNG in Maruti’s popular hatchback Swift or the Hyundai i20, it emerges that the cost is higher for CNG than diesel — the average per/ km running cost of these cars is around . 2.10 on CNG and . 1.77 on diesel.

General Motors today launched the Bharat Stage IV emission norms compliant variant of its multi utility vehicle (MUV) Tavera, priced between Rs 7.51 lakh and Rs 10.34 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

"With the help of this new Tavera we'll be able to now sell the vehicle in 13 cities where BS-IV norms are applicable. We hope this vehicle will be a leader in its segment," GM India President and Managing Director Lowell Paddock said here.

"What we expect from the upcoming Budget is that there should not be diesel tax. It is not the right time for it," General Motors India President and Managing Director Lowell Paddock said. There has been calls from different quarters to tax diesel cars saying subsidised fuel has been benefiting the affluent.

Toyota Motor Corp on Monday launched the world's most fuel-efficient hybrid car, as the company looks to fight off competition from pure electric vehicles.

The compact car, dubbed 'Aqua' in Japan and the 'Prius C' overseas, has a listed fuel efficiency of 35.4 km/litre (83.3 mpg), beating the current top Prius, which gets 32 km/litre.

General Motors Co confirmed it will make its first all-electric vehicle, a version of the Chevrolet Spark minicar that will debut in 2013 and take aim at Nissan Motor Co Ltd's Leaf.

"Chevrolet will produce an all-electric version of the Spark minicar for selected U.S. and global markets, including California," Jim Federico, Chevy's global vehicle chief engineer for electric vehicles, said at the company's Detroit headquarters on Wednesday.

GM's Chevrolet Spark minicar will go up against Nissan Motor Co.'s Leaf, the only all-battery-powered car currently available in the U.S. from a major auto maker.

It will be GM's first attempt at an all-electric vehicle in the U.S. since the company scrapped the EV-1 more than a decade ago. The auto maker did not provide any details of the vehicle's range on a charge or pricing.

Tesla Motors showed off the first production version of the sedan it hopes will make it the first pure mass-market electric car company and said that more than 6,000 advanced orders had already accounted for its capacity next year.

The model S sedan was rolled out over the weekend at a plant in California that has become a symbol for the maverick start-up’s ambitions to subvert the established car industry.
