New Delhi: Alongside the revised domestic tariff for financial year 2012-13, Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) is all set to start the process for green energy. In the upcoming tariff order, the regulator is going to announce a 2% renewable energy obligation (RPO) for Delhi discoms, a move which has already been delayed considerably and has many consumers worried about the costs involved.

In Los Angeles, city engineers and policy makers are taking an innovative approach to treating waste and protecting water. In the past, the city relied exclusively on trucking waste to Kern County for treatment. Groundbreaking technology has moved Los Angeles away from traditional methods of waste storage and treatment. New methods are lowering green house gas emissions and reducing the risk of water contamination. How can the city affordably avoid the pitfalls of trucking waste long distances for treatment? The solution is surprising.

Britain's energy plans call for tapping Iceland's geothermal resources in a move that could rekindle talk of creating a "supergrid" for electricity linking the continent, UK, North Africa and Iceland.

But experts say the project is too expensive and technically challenging to be feasible in the foreseeable future.

"Interconnectors in North West Europe will lead to electricity flows following the rules of supply and demand. So it will flow where it is needed, which is good for our security of supply," the UK's Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) said.

Italy will scale back financial incentives for solar and other renewable energy that have inflated consumer power bills more than expected, and also will raise national renewable energy targets for 2020, two ministers said on Wednesday.

Italy's green power industry has boomed in recent years as investors from around the world ranging from banks and private equity funds to utilities poured billions of euros into the sector, lured by generous support measures.

Dwindling supplies of metals, water and biomass could slow the deployment of clean energy technologies by 2035, a study by research organization the Stockholm Environment Institute and by business initiative 3C showed on Tuesday.

Governments and companies are increasingly developing low-carbon technologies to reduce their dependency on fossil fuel-based energy sources and to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) said on Monday it planned to raise $12 billion to build six geothermal power plants that should generate 585 megawatts by 2016, as it pushes to diversify its power sources.

KenGen's Managing Director Eddy Njoroge told Reuters that his company was open to different financing models to raise the financing required.

Kenya is the first African country to drill geothermal power, tapping vast steam energy.

In this new report WBCSD demonstrates how business model innovation helps provide more affordable and reliable products and services, overcomes market barriers or failures, and increases the profitability and scalability of sustainable engagement in low-income energy markets.

Geothermal power continues to be one of the least exploited renewable energy segments in India. Almost the entire estimated potential of about 10,600 MW remains unutilised except a few pilot installations for power generation and direct heat transfer. India is yet to establish its first commercial geothermal power plant.

The plant is expected to provide electricity to around 60,000 rural homes

Mahindra Solar One, a solar power developer, commissioned its first 5 MW solar power plant. A part of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) policy, the project is located near Jodhpur in Rajasthan and was the first to achieve non-recourse financing in the industry.

Millions of abandoned fossil fuel wells could be refitted to provide clean, low-carbon geothermal energy.
