NEW DELHI, Sep 18 (IANS): Assam has been allocated $2.5 million by a UN body to help improve hygiene in rural areas, stressing on the economic gains that would follow "when people spend less money on preventable sanitation-related diseases".

India is among 10 countries - seven African and three Asian - which have been identified for a five-year project. India loses $53.4 billion annually due to poor sanitation and hygiene, according to a recent report by the World Bank's Water and Sanitation Programme.

Nagaon: In what should send alarm bells ringing, the drinking water sources in 571 rural areas in Assam are fluoride contaminated. This situation has been confirmed by the State government to the Union government about two years ago. It is also reported that the Nagaon district has the highest contamination of fluoride in the water sources with 344 rural areas being badly affected. Atleast 102 areas in Karbi Anglong are high in flouride contamination followed by Kamrup district (56), Goalpara district (2), Golaghat (8), Karimganj (4) and Jorhat district (1).

GUWAHATI, July 27 – The Census of India-2011 Provisional Population Totals (Rural-Urban Distribution Assam) which was released on Monday has recorded a decadal urbanisation growth of 27.61, which is much lower than the corresponding figure of 38.24 per cent of the previous decade.

 

The urban population of Assam now stands at 43,88,756 and accounts for a percentage of 14.08 of its total population. This share was 12.90 per cent in the previous decade.
