GUWAHATI: There are 731 brick kilns across the State. According to the Pollution Control Board (PCB), Assam till December 2012, 193 out of the 731 brick kilns were operating illegally and flouting environmental regulations.

According to PCB sources, the 193 brick kilns which have been set up illegally are flouting the guidelines mentioned in the Air (Pollution Control and Prevention) Act, 1981.

The Centre has approved road projects worth Rs. 1,932 crore for Assam, which mainly include four-laning of the existing National Highway 37 from Numaligarh to Dibrugarh in three parts. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has given its approval for the four-laning of the Demow-Bogibeel junction section of National Highway-37 under the Special Accelerated Road Development Programme in North Eastern Region (SARDP-NE) on design, build, finance, operate and transfer (DBFOT) basis in build-operate-transfer (BOT) (Annuity) mode of delivery.

Assam-based Numaligarh Refinery Ltd (NRL), which has a massive expansion plan of its refinery on the cards, is eyeing the Bangladesh market to sell products in near future.

A senior company spokesperson confirmed Business Standard that NRL was exploring the neighbouring country’s market and business discussions with Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) and the government of Bangladesh for supplying diesel were on. “Both BPC and government of Bangladesh have expressed keen interest in the project and desired that this project be pursued expeditiously,” the spokesperson added. NRL and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL), NRL’s parent company, had “detailed discussion” with BPC and Bangladesh government representatives in the month of January 2013 to “progress on this proposal”.

Guwahati: As the picturesque World Heritage Site at Kaziranga National Park (KNP) was thrown open for tourists for the season on Thursday scores of tourists from England and Japan along with several groups of domestic tourists visited the ‘world heritage site’ known as abode of one-horned rhinoceros.
