The energy consumed in irrigation pumping constitutes a major share of the total energy utilised for agriculture. As the increasing demand of energy has aroused viz. in electrical, oil and gas, hence there is a strong need to explore the possibility of using the alternate and renewable energy sources like wind particularly for irrigation water pumping. Keeping this in view, the present study was taken up to assess the wind potential of the region and its utilisation in irrigation pumping.

SHAKEN, NOT SHATTERED: Waves Of Panic Hit East Coast
Chennai/Kolkata: Waves of panic swept through India’s eastern coast on Wednesday afternoon as cities were rocked by tremors and repeated alerts of a possible tsunami being triggered by a massive earthquake of 8.6 magnitude off the Indonesian coast.

Mild tremors were felt in some parts of Krishna, Guntur and Khammam districts of Andhra Pradesh around noon today, triggering panic among the people.

Nandigama and Kanchakacharla in Krishna district, Amaravati and Kosure in Guntur district and Madhira in Khammam district reported tremors between 12.25 and 12.30 p.m., locals said.

People ran out of houses as vibrations were felt five times in a short span. No casualty or damage has, however, been reported.

Almost 10 per cent of villages in the state have been freshly earmarked to receive notifications under the Andhra Pradesh Water, Land and Trees Act, 2002.

The villages have been identified by the groundwater department here that has asked the state government to strictly check deep-bore drilling in about 2,500 villages that are to be notified in a fresh move this year.

Hyderabad/Bangalore: The unprecedented cold wave sweeping across southern India has claimed seven lives so far in Andhra Pradesh and broken century-old temperature records at several places in neighbouring Karnataka. Chilly winds blew across coastal and north Telangana districts, claiming the lives of four elderly persons at Gudipudi village near Sattenapalle in Guntur district on Monday. Two women each died in Bapatla and Visakhapatnam.

The Andhra Pradesh Government has declared 44 more mandals as drought-affected today located in Guntur, Visakhapatnam and East Godavari districts taking the number of rain deficit mandals to be declared hit to 709.

On Wednesday, the Government had added 13 more mandals located in Visakhapatnam, Medak and Karimnagar factoring adverse seasonal conditions leading to damage of standing crops after the retreat of the South-West monsoon.

At least one person was killed and scores of villages inundated in the torrential rains that lashed the state since Monday night. All three regions of the state received heavy rains with Nalgonda district being the worst hit. Several tanks breached and rivulets overflowed leaving the main and artillery roads in the district under water.
