Water balance is a useful hydrologic tool. Recent literature has seen some studies on India’s water budget, which show that evapotranspiration estimate for India is much lower than what may be expected given the India’s climate and land use. This note attempts to find an answer to this puzzle and suggests how it can be resolved.

Japan's response to the nuclear crisis that followed the March 11 tsunami was confused and riddled with problems, including an erroneous assumption an emergency cooling system was working and a delay in disclosing dangerous radiation leaks, an interim report revealed on December 26.

The disturbing picture of harried and bumbling workers and government officials scrambling to respond to the problems at Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant was depicted in the report detailing a government investigation.

The reactors of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project having state-of-the-art safety features are the safest, the Central panel of experts has certified. Explaining the features of the KKNPP's 1,000 MWe VVER reactors, the panel's convener A. E. Muthunayagam, an oceanography expert, said that safety measures

Highlighting the safety features of the Koodankulam nuclear plant, former President A.P.J Abdul Kalam today said even a Fukushima-like accident can be avoided in the coastal project in Tamil Nadu.

"Koodankulam plant has installed 154 Hydrogen recombiners across the plant which can absorb any leaked hydrogen and prevent any structural damage," Kalam, who visted protest-hit nuclear power project yesterday, said addressing international nuclear scientists here.

The Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP) has built into its design a multi-layered safety mechanism along with additional protocols to safeguard against systemic or human error at the 2000-MW station, nuclear experts said on Sunday.

The toxic gas leakage at Sequent Scientific Limited in the MIDC area of Boisar, which killed four persons on Tuesday evening, may have been caused by old, worn out pipes, workers alleged on Wednesday.
“The pipes have undergone wear and tear over the years. Although inspection is done before every batch is manufactured, the pipes are not the focus,” said 22-year-old Sunil Chaurasaia, one of the six workers who were in the reactor room where the hydrogen sulphide gas leaked.

A new technology roadmap on Carbon Capture and Storage in Industrial Applications shows that carbon capture and storage (CCS) has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions from industrial applications by 4 gigatonnes in 2050. Such an amount is equal to roughly one-tenth of the total emission cuts needed from the energy sector by the middle of the century. This requires a rapid deployment of CCS technologies in various industrial sectors, and across both OECD and non-OECD countries.

MNRE (Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Govt of India) has sponsored a R&D project to ERDA. As part of this project, a 2 x 5 kW wind turbine is installed and integrated with water electrolyser. Complete demonstration system is expected to be ready soon. This demonstration project is undertaken to validate the feasibility of this concept.
