A team of scientists at the Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP) here has developed a new technology to convert environmentally-hazardous plastic into petroleum products.

After nearly a decade-long experiments, the team of six IIP scientists, led by its Director, Dr Madhukar Omkarnath Garg, has managed to achieve a breakthrough in developing a “combination of catalysts” which can convert the plastic either into gasoline or diesel or aromatics along with LPG as a common byproduct.

A two-day long industrial training workshop organised jointly by the Council of Science and Industrial Research (CSIR) and Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIMAP) was inaugurated in the Indian Institute of Petroleum on Thursday.

The chief guest was Uttarakhand Council of Science and Technology (UCOST) director Dr Rajendra Dobhal.
