For more than 20 villages on the east bank of Jia-Bharali river in Naduar, Sonitpur, covering 10 kilometres from Chalanighat to Cheunichook, erosion has been a perennial problem since 1950. More than 10 thousand bighas of cultivation land, homes and properties have been engulfed by the river of these villages. But the department concerned has been a passive spectator, except spending more than 20 crore rupees in futile erosion control programmes. Year after year, the people of these villages have had to bear the brunt of flood and erosion by the river without any respite.
