DIPHU: The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA), was introduced with an objective to provide legal guarantee of 100 days of wage in a financial year to every rural household, whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work at the minimum wage rate as has been prescribed for agricultural labour in the State.

However, instead of helping the poor in their uplift, MNREGA has become a boon for the officials and politicians in Karbi Anglong. They spare no stone unturned to loot public money with both hands

Guwahati: The death of a female elephant undergoing treatment for paralysis in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district Wednesday has again brought to light the human-elephant conflict in the region.

“Conflict is a fact of life in areas where people and elephants coexist, especially due to agriculture,” said Abhijit Rabha, chief conservator of forests in the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council.

GUWAHATI, May 10 – There was no improvement in the power scenario of the State for the eighth consecutive day today. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today reviewed the scene and directed the Power Department to take immediate steps for improving the dismal power situation. The State today had a shortfall of around 440 MW in power supply during the peak load hours. Its off-peak load shortfall today was around 255 MW. The Karbi Langpi Hydel Project generated 40 MW of power during the daytime and evening today, said Assam Power Distribution Company Ltd (APDCL) sources.

Diphu: Various organizations and NGOs of the district in their press release on Wednesday demanded an immediate halt of illegal extraction and excavation of forest resources under Marat Longri Wildlife sanctuary area of Karbi Anglong district. In their joint meeting held at KSYC conference hall, the organizations after a meticulous discussion resolved to take action against illegal expeditions of extracting forest resources by some unscrupulous individuals.

GUWAHATI: For implementation of the Total Sanitation Campaign in Assam, National Coordinator of New Delhi’s Sulabh International Social Service, Rupal Roy, met Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi yesterday.

Roy briefed the Chief Minister as to how this sanitation programme should be carried on in the State. The Total Sanitation Campaign is a comprehensive programme to ensure sanitation facilities in rural areas with broader goal to eradicate the practice of open defecation.

NEW DELHI: The National Green Tribunal has sought a report from the Ministry of Environment and Forest on industrial units functioning in the vicinity of the Kaziranga National Park in Assam. Asking the ministry to conduct a survey in the park's vicinity, the Tribunal also expressed its displeasure on the ministry's failure to a respond to the plea which alleged unregulated quarrying and mining activities in the 'No Development Zone' around the park and Tiger Reserve and Karbi-Anglong Elephant Reserve in Assam.

Mission Double Cropping will be the buzzword of the Agriculture Department under the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council for the current fiscal year.
Karbi Anglong with its 10,434 sq km geographical area is the largest district in Assam and the second largest district in India. The net cultivable area of the district is 1,82,500 hectares and its gross cropped area is 2,33,650 hectares.

Guwahati, Feb. 16: The National Green Tribunal has directed the state government not to grant permission to any new stone-crushing unit and other industrial units within the no-development zone of Kaziranga National Park. The bench of the National Green Tribunal comprising chairman Justice A.S. Naidu and expert member G.K. Pandey also directed the state authorities not to renew the permission granted to stone-crusher units and other units which are functioning in the vicinity of the Kaziranga National Park till further orders.

Coming to the rescue of the endangered one-horned rhino and other threatened species in Kaziranga National Park in Assam, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed both the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) and the State Government not to grant fresh approvals or renew permission to any stone crushing or industrial units within the “No Development Zone” of the Park till further orders.

The Hindustan Paper Corporation Ltd may be forced to shut down its Nagaon paper mill at Jagiroad in Morigaon district if it fails to extend its agreement with the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council on bamboo supply, the main raw material of the paper industry.

The 30-year-old agreement will expire in October. A source at the corporation today told The Telegraph that in November 2011, a team representing the paper unit had moved the council’s chief executive member, Jayram Engleng, to extend the agreement before it expires.
