DIBRUGARH: The impunity with which poachers are killing wild animals, especially the one–horned rhinoceros in the State, is worrying. The recovery of the headless carcass of an elephant at Charaipung range reinforces the ineffectiveness of the wildlife protection measures of the forest department.

Since 2007, 93 rhinos have been killed, 12 of them in the last two months. In September last year, five rhinos were killed, two on consecutive days. The discovery of a rhino whose horn had been cut away while it was left to die a slow death last year, sent shock waves but since then, more such killings with the same modus operandi have taken place.

GUWAHATI: As a special case, the Government of India has sanctioned Rs 161 crore for constructing roads in Assam with 250 and above inhabitants under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY).

“In other parts of the country, roads are built under PMGSY in areas with a population of 500 and above. But this norm has been relaxed for Assam. Also, the Centre has sanctioned the construction of 689 km roads in areas with a population of 500 and above. This new project will cost Rs 820 crore and it will include 347 RCC bridges,” said State Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Ajanta Neog while talking to mediapersons in Guwahati on Wednesday.

September 22 is World Rhino Day. At sanctuaries across the globe, the species wallow in royal treatment to mark the occasion.

Union Environment and Forests Minister Jayanthi Natarajan on Wednesday announced a fund of Rs 1 crore for the infrastructural development of Kaziranga National Park’s (KNP) tiger reserve area. She also assured 24-hour security arrangements in KNP for protection of wildlife, providing nine speed boats and a battery-powered aircraft.

The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests had forewarned the State Government and the Forest Department to be on the guard against another wave of devastating floods in Kaziranga National Park

The death of 39 rhinos in and around the world-famous Kaziranga National Park in less than 10 months has brought to the fore the threat faced by the endangered animal.

The threat comes from poachers, who kill the rare one-horned rhinoceros for its prized horn whose price in the international market varies from Rs. 40 lakh to Rs. 90 lakh, and flood which is an annual occurrence in Assam.

Guwahati: Days after Assam’s Kaziranga National Park hit the headlines following a spate in poaching of the one-horned rhinos, the Assam government has decided to rush a 100-member team of the elite Assam Forest Protection Force (AFPF) for the protection of the rare animal.

Assam Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain Tuesday said a 50-member team of the AFPF had already been dispatched to the national park, which is a Unesco World Heritage site. He added that another 50 personnel of the elite force will be sent to the park within this week.
