A Public Interest Litigation has been filed at the Madras High Court bench here to curb alleged illegal sand quarrying activities in Karur district.

Many dyeing units in Karur have been illegally siphoning off groundwater from the parched Amaravathy riverbed. The unlawful activity has been going on unchecked under the very nose of the officials. Scores of dyeing units are situated at Sellandipalayam, Sukkaliyur and Rayanur on the southern banks of the river in Karur. Though a ban is in place on operating dyeing units without zero liquid discharge systems, many units are operating on the sly. The officials have taken token action against some units but many continue to operate unimpeded in the region.

Urge State and Centre to expedite disbursal of compensation

Farmers affected by industrial pollution in the district have called upon the State and the Central government to expedite disbursal of compensation to those distressed by pollution by dyeing units besides making efforts to protect the precious natural resources. “Failure to protect our genuine interests will force us to put up our own candidates in the Lok Sabha elections,” the affected farmers have threatened.

With the State government stressing on improving infrastructure with a view to ushering in all round development at a brisk pace in the days to come, Transport Minister V.Senthil Balaji said in a series of government programmes in the Aravakurichi region of Karur district on Sunday.

The Minister was participating in the bhumi pooja for laying new roads and public utility facilities in several places in Aravakurichi, K.Paramathi and Pallappatti areas of the district falling under Aravakurichi Legislative Assembly constituency. The total cost of the projects that were kick started on Sunday was put at Rs.5.70 crore.

The State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) has granted environment clearance for 11 more sand quarries in the Cauvery-Coleroon river basin. A few days ago, the SEIAA had granted clearance for 10 new sand quarries in Tiruchi, Karur, Ariyalur, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur and Namakkal districts. In the second batch of clearance, 11 quarries have been approved, sources told The Hindu on Friday.
