Guwahati: A Kaziranga Green Marathon, coinciding with World Environment Day on June 5, has been planned at the world famous national park by environmentalists and district administration.

Aaranyak, a society for biodiversity conservation in northeast India, which is collaborating with Bokakhat District Master Athletic Association, Assam Forest Department and Bokakhat Civil Administration to organise the run, said here on Wednesday the half Marathon from Bokakhat to Kohora will be held in the early morning of June 5.

Dispur has moved the Centre through the DoNER ministry for setting up a centre to collect hydrological data with German help to ensure effective planning and execution of anti-flood and erosion projects in the state. State water resources minister Rajiv Lochan Pegu disclosed this to The Telegraph on the sidelines of a daylong seminar on low-cost technology for mitigation of flood and riverbank erosion of the river Brahmaputra at the secretariat.

Madhya Pradesh has bagged the highest number of awards for tiger conservation. In the two-day meeting of the Field Directors of the Tiger Reserves (TR) that began on Wednesday various conservation issues including protection, extremist threat, phase-4 monitoring and compliance of effective management were discussed at length.

BOKAKHAT, May 2 – Camera traps have recorded the presence of 118 tigers in Kaziranga National Park in the last three years, reports PTI. The annual monitoring of tigers in the KNP using camera traps during 2009, 2010 and 2011 recorded a total of 118 adult, sub-adult and cubs, according to a report ‘Tigers of Kaziranga National Park’ which was released on Sunday.

The figure includes six identified tigers that died during the period of study, the report released by Assam Forest and Environment Minister Rockybul Hussain said.

The tall grasslands of Kaziranga National Park by the Brahmaputra River in Assam is home to 118 tigers. This has been detected through camera traps over a period of last three years. This has been brought out in a report called the ‘Tigers Of Kaziranga National Park’ prepared by Aranyak, (an NGO working on conservation and bio-diversity on North-East) and released by the State Forest Department on Monday.

The high-density reserve covers 1,000 square kilometers

“Kaziranga is one of the highest density tiger habitats in the country and has a healthy breeding source population,” says a report released on Monday. It has over 100 tigers, the estimate based on the annual monitoring carried out in 2009, 2010 and 2011 using the camera trap method.

Rapid expansion of settlements inside Dibru-Saikhowa National Park that shelters wide ranging wildlife and flora – many endemic to it – is pushing this unique natural habitat to the brink. Abysmal manpower shortage is further aggravating the situation at Dibru Saikhowa, which is now caught in a grim battle for survival. Conservationists have attributed the ills afflicting the park – also a biosphere reserve – to the inertia of the Forest Department and the State Government.

NEW DELHI: With poachers posing a massive threat to tigers in India, the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) has launched a pilot project in Uttarakhand's Corbett National Park for round-the-clock surveillance of the park using high definition cameras. The project E-eye (electronic eye) is a software-based system where 10 high resolution thermal and infrared cameras mounted on a tower are spread across the 350 sq km area of the park that falls in a highly sensitive zone bordering Uttar Pradesh.

NEW DELHI: The National Green Tribunal has sought a report from the Ministry of Environment and Forest on industrial units functioning in the vicinity of the Kaziranga National Park in Assam. Asking the ministry to conduct a survey in the park's vicinity, the Tribunal also expressed its displeasure on the ministry's failure to a respond to the plea which alleged unregulated quarrying and mining activities in the 'No Development Zone' around the park and Tiger Reserve and Karbi-Anglong Elephant Reserve in Assam.
