In a bid to get back the rare migratory Siberian cranes to India, Environment Ministry has signed an MoU with Siberia to coordinate its conservation and protection. Following large number of reported killing of these species enroute their migratory paths especially across Pakistan and Afganisthan, the Ministry has signed MoUs with a number of countries that the birds fly over before reaching India to ensure their safe passage.

This paper examines the use of constructed wetlands for water purification. The introduction begins witha brief overview of wetlands: their nature and services offered. These wetlands are ecoststems with water that is static or flowing and characerized by emergent , floating and submerged aquatic vegetation. Some of the services provided by wetlands are fish and fiber, water supply, water purification, flood regulation, recreational opportunities and tourism. It then details the importance of wetlands for water purification.Toxins enter the wetlands through farms, factories and runoff.

JAIPUR: A study would soon be instituted at Keoladeo birds sanctuary in Bharatpur to understand the changes in the bio-diversity of the park after the recent introduction of water from Chambal river. The study would be done by the Wildlife Institute of India (WII).

JAIPUR: Good news trickles in for the migratory birds at the Keoladeo Ghana National Park, which will soon receive about 300 million cubic feet (mcft) water through the Chambal Dholpur-Bharatpur drinking water project. The water is expected to ensure a good season for both the winged visitors and the bird enthusiasts.

Water woes of the celebrated bird sanctuary, Keoladeo National Park (KNP), Bharatpur, may come to an end soon if the Rajasthan Government accepts a recommendation from the State's Board for Wildlife to reserve a share of water from the Panchana dam in the neighbouring Karauli district.

About a decade after the celebrated Siberian cranes ceased to visit the Keoladeo National Park near Bharatpur in Rajasthan, the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests is planning to take up a captive breeding programme for the rare birds in the same terrain.

Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh is prepared to go on the warpath yet again. His latest battleground: the endangered wetlands.

Over the next few months he intends to proactively and aggressively work with States to implement the Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Rules, 2010.
