In a remarkable attempt under the auspices of the department of Forests, BTC under Haltugaon Forest Division in Kokrajhar as many as 100 jawans of 15 Dogra Regiment of Indian Army & 315 Eco-Task Force Battalion successfully planted 40885 saplings within an hour at Khalashi area under Jharbari Range in Haltugaon Division on April 29.

This outnumbered the Guinness Book World Record in which as many as 26,422 trees were planted on December 5, 2009 last at Gransha Park of Northern Ireland of the United Kingdom.

KOKRAJHAR, April 26 – Some leading scientists of India have underlined the potential of aquaculture with integrated sustainable farming in the BTC region.

GUWAHATI: The North East Social Trust (NEST) has said that the implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) has not yielded much result in Assam.

The NEST along with various other organizations of the State is monitoring the efficacy of the MGNREGA implementation in Assam for the last couple of years. For the 2011-12 financial year, the NEST carried out an intensive research on the basis of the government data to find out the implications of the Act in the State.

Kokrajhar, April 17: The Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), which has been facing major problems with illegal felling of trees and encroachment in forest areas, has drawn up a plan to conserve the forest wealth under its area of jurisdiction, including strengthening the frontline staff with more arms and ammunition.

Expressing concern over the degrading forest cover because of encroachment and felling, BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary said the council was committed to protect and conserve the forest cover.

KOKRAJHAR: Keeping an eye on the wanton destruction of forests and illegal encroachment in the reserve forest land of Bodoland, former members of rebel groups under Ex- BLT Welfare Society, Surrendered National Democratic Front of Boroland (SNDFB) Welfare Association involving the NDFB (Progressive) and NGOs have decided to protect the forest resources.

KOKRAJHAR: The farmers of Janagaon, Titaguri under Titaguri Development Block expressed their strong resentment following the supply of unfit seeds to the farmers in Kokrajhar and demanded compensation for the loss of working expenditure.

Kokrajhar, Sept. 25: Various organisations, NGOs and citizens in Udalguri district, which have been feeding elephants in the forest area, have come together to find a permanent solution to mitigate the man-elephant conflict.

In the past two months, at least six persons and nine elephants have died in the district, including a forest official Amrit Sarma, who was trampled to death by a wild elephant inside Nonai forest on September 14.

The man-elephant conflict has increased in the area, particularly in adjoining Khalingduar reserve forest and Bornadi wildlife sanctuary.

The scheme for Extending Green Revolution to Eastern India was introduced under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) in 2010-11. It was aimed at increasing agricultural production through use of new seeds and advanced agricultural technologies. Assam was included under the scheme in the later part of the 2010-11 fiscal. Rs 17.50 crore was allotted to Assam under this scheme, said sources in the Agriculture Department.

Bimal Mondol, 35, of Saptagram in Dhubri district died at Kokrajhar Rupnath Brahma civil hospital, where he had been referred to after falling ill. Earlier, Judeswari Goyary, 55, of Khargaon village in Kokrajhar had died in a Bongaigaon hospital on Saturday, Gangusham Narzary, 38, of Shyamgaon in Kokrajhar had died on August 17 and Monoda Bala Dey Sarkar, 90, of Daloabari had died at Kokrajhar Rupnath Brahma civil hospital earlier this month.
