NEW DELHI, Dec 12 – Even as the agitation against the Subansiri Hydroelectric Project gathers momentum, Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) of two hydro power projects in Assam were turned down by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) albeit on non-environmental ground.
Two Detailed Project Reports are currently under examination in CEA. However, the DPRs of 150 MW Lower Kopili and 60 MW Karbi Langpi were returned by CEA due to inadequate geological investigation and non-up grade of hydrology in case of Lower Kopili Hydroelectric Project.

Unscientific coal mining in Jaintia Hills has claimed a victim, affecting functioning of Kopili Hydel Project, by discharging dangerous toxic waste from the mines and acidifying the project

Shillong: Experts and Researchers will meet here today to deliberate on the present crisis of the Kopili hydro power project due to the acidic nature of the reservoir water.

State-owned North Eastern Electric Power Corporation(NEEPCO), which is running the 275 MW power project, said the life-span of the reservoir might not be reduced if the acidity water is tackled at the earliest.

The south-western part on the north bank of Kopili river of Hojai subdivision from Kharikhana to Uttar Komrakata is basically sugarcane, vegetables, oilseeds, maize, pulse crops producing areas and paddy cultivation depends on the monsoon behaviour. Heavy rainfall creates flood havoc by river Kopili inundating almost the entire low-lying areas except some high lands on the north-eastern side.
