The Uttarakhand Forest and Rural Development Commissioner has directed the Compensatory Afforestation Management & Planning Authority (CAMPA), Uttarakhand chief executive officer to facilitate plantation of fruit trees in forests to mitigate the human-monkey conflict in the State with CAMPA funds.

Climate and weather conditions, such as the North Atlantic Oscillation, precipitation and temperature influence the birth sex ratio (BSR) of various higher latitude species, including deer, elephant seals or northern human populations. Although, tropical regions show only little variation in temperature, climate and weather conditions can fluctuate with consequences for phenology and food resource availability. Here, we evaluate, whether the BSR of chimpanzees, inhabiting African tropical forests, is affected by climate fluctuations as well.

Tropical forests in Africa may be more resilient to future climate change than the Amazon and other regions, a gathering of scientists has said. An international conference agreed that the region’s surviving tree species had endured a number of climatic catastrophes over the past 4,000 years.

As a result, they are better suited to cope with future shifts in the climate.

The event at the University of Oxford looked at the “fate of Africa’s tropical forests in the 21st century”.

Crop-raiding is a major source of conflict between people and wildlife globally, impacting local livelihoods and impeding conservation. Conflict mitigation strategies that target problematic wildlife behaviours such as crop-raiding are notoriously difficult to develop for large-bodied, cognitively complex species. Many crop-raiders are generalist feeders. In more ecologically specialised species crop-type selection is not random and evidence-based management requires a good understanding of species' ecology and crop feeding habits.

There are over 0.3 million rhesus monkeys in Northern India. Approximately 48.5% of these are living in human habitation areas. The inordinate growth in populations of such monkeys in recent years has led to an unhealthy competition for space and food between man and monkey.

Forest fires and land clearing by palm oil firms could kill off within weeks about 200 orangutans in a forest in western Indonesia, an environmental group said on Wednesday.

But more than two-thirds of the area has been divided up into palm oil concessions, said the Coalition to Save Tripa.

Monkey menace in Himachal Pradesh has reached the corridors of the Planning Commission. On Friday, national planners were surprised after the state informed them about its ‘unusual but controversial’ target to sterilize two lakh monkeys this year.
Perceived as a copybook example of man-animal conflict, the BJP government has justified the move, arguing that monkeys are destroying forests, crops and attacking tourists and locals alike.

The inmates of the Delhi Zoological Park are to get exclusive customised enclosures. Most inmates of the zoo belonging to the same family have similar kind of enclosures.
