District administration has given permission to desilt and sell silt after obtaining permission from Department of Mines and Minerals; officials yet to pass orders.

The representatives of various farmers' associations here have urged the district administration to give permission to water users' association to desilt the water bodies instead of giving the contract to a company.

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu police on Monday arrested a 50-year-old German national who allegedly raised funds for protests against the Kudankulam nuclear power plant. Tamil Nadu 'Q' branch sleuths, who monitor the activities of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the state, arrested Sonnteg Reiner Hermann in Nagercoil on Monday. They brought him to Chennai in the evening. Immigration officials said they have cancelled Hermann's visa and that he would be deported early on Tuesday.

It is high time the district administration explored ways to ensure safe and scientific disposal of garbage collected from the Nagercoil municipal limit and other extension areas either in the existing compost yard at Valampurai Vilai, situated in the heart of the town or in some other places.
