In hydro electric projects, grouting plays an important role in controlling the seepage and improvement in rock strength for the construction of underground as well as surface structures. The Nathpa Jhakri Hydroelectric Power Station (NJHPS) 1500 MW, the largest hydropower station in India under operation, and downstream Rampur Hydro Electric Project (RHEP) 412 MW, presently under advanced stage of construction, and planned to run in tandem are both located on river Satluj in the Himalayan region.

Keen on taking advantage of the national solar mission, the public sector Sutlej Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN) will make a foray into the renewable energy sector with a pilot solar power project in the state, to be set up alongside the Nathpa Jhakri project.

Every winter, the cold climate almost freezes Himachal Pradesh's hydropower generation. But this time unusually harsh Arctic conditions in the higher reaches, where most of the rivers originate, have made production nosedive further. Officials said hydropower generation starts declining in October. By December, it comes down by 80 percent. This winter, it dipped more.

Punjab Congress president Capt Amarinder Singh on Monday said there was no plan or proposal to scrap any of the power projects in the state, signed through MoU route by this government, when the Congress comes to power after the February assembly elections.

The country’s largest 1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station, owned and operated by SJVN Limited in Himachal Pradesh, has set a new record by crossing 6,000 million units of power generation between April 1 and October 6. “The generation is only 900 million units short of the 6,900 million units targetted for 2011-12. It is already 750 MUs more than the target and also 810 MU more than last year’s record on this date. The Plant Availability Factor during the period is more than 104.70 per cent,” said Additional General Manager (Corporate Relations) Vijay Verma.

The Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station owned and operated by Sutlej Jal Vidyut Nigam in Himachal Pradesh has made a record generation of 1151.205 million units (MU) this August, breaking the earlier record of 1143.681 MU in July 2009.
