Bhubanewsar The Orissa government on Thursday submitted a memorandum to the central government seeking financial assistance of R2,120.92 crore for relief and rehabilitation in flood affected areas of the state.

Floods triggered by heavy rains over the past week and huge discharge of water from Hirakud dam have killed at least 16 people in Orissa and displaced thousands, an official said Sunday. There were reports of six people being swept away in Nayagarh and Bargarh districts but their dead bodies were yet to be found.
The situation continued to be grim in several places of the affected 19 of the state's 30 districts, forcing the authorities to press into service three helicopters Sunday to drop food packets.

BHUBANESWAR: The State Government has set 2013 deadline for completing the drinking water projects in the four fluoride-hit districts. NAYAGARH: As many as 55 villages under tribal-infested Chhamundia and Badasilinga gram panchayats here have been cut off from the mainstream since Thursday after a temporary bridge over river Brutang on Gania-Chhamundia road in Daspalla was washed away due to heavy rains.
