In a relief to students at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) campus, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will complete installation of the 3m-high and 1,500m-long noise barriers from Powai lake to the end of the institute’s boundary wall by May-end. “The barriers will block the outside noise from the IIT campus. We have already installed noise barriers in Bandra- Kurla Complex (BKC) and the decibel levels have reduced from 98 to (the) acceptable limit of 55,” said Dilip Kawathkar, joint project director, MMRDA.

MUMBAI: Professors and students at the IIT, Powai, will soon be able to have classes without traffic noise, thanks to a 1,500-metre noise barrier. Estimated to cost Rs 3.5 crore, the structures will be ready by the month-end.

The Nainital district administration and Corbett National Park authorities have started work to raise awareness among owners of resorts around Corbett regarding the recent Government order banning sound amplification in resorts within 500 metres of the national park. It is worth mentioning here that following a directive of the Uttarakhand High Court on a Public Interest Litigation filed by a local NGO, the State Government had ordered a ban on sound amplification in resorts within a specific area around Corbett in April this year.

Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police Neeru Garg convened a meeting with the representatives of Wedding Points’ Association to discuss measures to control noise pollution in Dehradun on Monday. She said that the police will take all possible steps to control noise pollution in the district. No one will be allowed to use loudspeakers between 10 pm and 6 am, as has been directed by the High Court. During the meeting held on Monday, the association members were asked to suggest measures for implementing the High Court’s direction regarding noise pollution.

DEHRADUN: Acting on the directive of the Uttarakhand high court, the state government on Wednesday imposed a blanket ban on noise pollution in a radius of 500 metres around the Corbett National Park and declared it a "complete silence zone".

A two-judge bench of the high court gave the directive responding to a PIL filed by a local NGO. The decision will mitigate levels of noise pollution that affect the habitat of many species in one of India's best known tiger reserves.

Noise levels have been monitored at selected locations of Delhi and Roorkee, viz. Rithala (Delhi), Panchsheel Enclave (Delhi), New Friends Colony (NH-2 Delhi) and Gurudwara (NH-73, Roorkee) along with observations of traffic volume, speeds and other geometrical parameters.

This study proposes a comprehensive noise abatement programme following the best practicable and economical option (BPEO) for implementation in metro city like Delhi for reducing annoyance and ill effects of traffic noise. It reviews potential applications of noise control barriers and vegetation for reducing road traffic noise and presents a design morphology and decision matrix using TOPSIS (Technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution) approach for selection of appropriate sound barriers.

New Delhi: Furious that despite its orders a temple in southeast Delhi failed to lower the decibel level of loudspeakers, the Delhi high court on Monday ordered seizure of the loudspeakers. Justice Vipin Sanghi ordered Delhi Police to immediately confiscate the loudspeakers blaring music after it realized that the temple management had not abided with its earlier instructions.
