A farmer was killed and 175 injured in Tripura when a tornado, accompanied by rain and hailstorm, hit the state, destroying more than 1,000 houses, uprooting trees and disrupting communication, officials said on Tuesday.

Authorities have stepped up efforts to provide relief to those affected by the tornado that struck late on Monday. The injured comprise children, women and elderly people.

ONGC-Tripura Power Corporation (OTPC)'s 724-MW gas-based thermal power project at Palatana in South Tripura district would start generation by June, a top official of state-owned oil major ONGC said today.

Tripura has been declared ‘malaria prone’ following the detection of 346 positive cases of Plasmodium Falciparum (PF) in the State during the last one month, official sources said on Thursday.

Health minister Tapan Chakraborty said that medical experts have advised the State government to use second generation drugs instead of traditional medicines to prevent malaria.

Agartala: State-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) will set up a Rs 5,000 crore, gas-based fertilizer plant in Tripura to meet the growing shortage of urea, the most commonly used soil manure in the northeastern region.

“ONGC has already initiated the process to set up the natural gas-based urea project in northern Tripura adjoining Assam,” a senior company official said on Tuesday.

AGARTALA: North Tripura district administration has launched investigation into the report of illegal trade of land in 18 tea estates in the state that accounted for loss of government revenue of Rs 400 crore, officials said here on Monday.

According to the report, the initial investigation revealed that about 12,880 acres of land in the tea estates had been sold and transferred over the years violating Tripura Land Record Act 1960.

- Unions, land laws obstruct foray into trade
Calcutta, Aug. 21: Tea cultivators in Tripura, hit by reducing profit margins over the years, are pushing for a shift to the economical and less labour intensive rubber plantation.

However, a stringent land lease law and active labour unions in the state have till now prevented any major foray into the trade.

In a classic case of profit-labour welfare seesaw, the unions are vehemently opposing the move, fearing a loss of livelihood of the over 14,000 strong tea garden workforce.

Agartala: Tripura has witnessed a 23 per cent drop in the malaria cases as compared to 2009, a top health official said on Sunday.

Citing that four deaths had been recorded in hospitals this year, Director of Family Welfare and Preventive Medicine department Dr R K Dhar said there has been a sharp drop in the number of Malaria fatalities recently.

Agartala: Malaria has turned into an epidemic in remote hamlets of Dhalai district in North Tripura claiming 15 lives over a month, officials said here today.

The health directorate sent a contingent of specialist doctors in the affected areas and had been holding health camps in the locations besides, mobilising more doctors in Manu, Chawmanu and Chailengta Primary Health Centres.
