The Department of Environment (DoE) yesterday fined a dyeing factory in Gazipur Tk 14 lakh for not setting up Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) even 21 months after the factory owner promised to set up the ETP.

The DoE fined the owner of the factory, Ema Cintex Ltd, and also ordered to keep its production shut. It also rebuked its owner Modabber Hossain, said a DoE press release.

The factory has been dumping untreated chemical wastes into the river Turag and polluting the river severely, it added.

The owner has been promising to set up ETP since October 5, 2010.

The Department of Environment (DoE) yesterday fined a dyeing factory and a housing project in Narayanganj and Savar a total of Tk 37 lakh for violating environmental laws.

The dyeing factory Chaiti Composite Ltd in Sonargaon of Narayanganj was fined Tk 22 lakh for polluting the environment and a DoE team fined Ahmed Karim, owner of Nofel Digital City in Savar, Tk 15 for lakh grabbing public land at Senwalia in the upazila, said a press release.

The Department of Environment (DoE) fined a textile dyeing factory Tk 21 lakh in Savar yesterday on charge of releasing untreated chemical effluents into the river Dhaleswari.

AKH Knitting and Dyeing Ltd had been warned to stop polluting the river three times since 2006. It was penalised for the first time yesterday, says a press release.

Mohammad Munir Chowdhury, director of DoE (enforcement), handed down the penalty.

Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has issued show-cause notices to three unauthorised dyeing units near Perur and action is to be taken on these units soon.

The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has caught a small-scale dyeing unit for unauthorised operations during raids at Venkateshapuram in Tirupur knitwear cluster on Tuesday.

The Environmental Tribunal of Punjab has become completely dysfunctional, as no progress has been made on 1,135 cases pending with the tribunal due to the absence of its chairman for the past 10 months, Daily Times learnt on Sunday.

The contract of the previous chairman, Khawaja Muhammad Afzal, expired on July 1, 2011. Before his retirement, the tribunal was dealing with 900 environment cases, while 235 new cases were constituted after his retirement.

Twelve illegal dyeing units were demolished in a drive that was conducted by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) in and around Komarapalayam town in Tiruchengode Taluk on Thursday.

The drive was conducted at Thaneerpanthalkadu, Kotaimedu, Eswari Nagar, Cheran Nagar and Kamaraj Nagar. District Environmental Engineer (DEE) K. Gokuladas said that six winches, three generators and 76 masonry tanks were demolished using earth movers.

The High Court yesterday directed the managements of five readymade garment factories at Ashulia in Savar not to dump any waste on agricultural lands and water bodies.

The units on the outskirts of Dhaka are Mozart Knitting and Dyeing Industries, Kajal Garments, Nasirullah Cotton Mills, Apparels Village and Simtex Industries.

Five textile dyeing and printing units in Periyasemur area on the outskirts of the city have been dismantled by the District Environmental Monitoring Committee for allegedly discharging untreated effluents into water sources and for operating without proper licence.

Committee members raided the units yesterday and found them discharging untreated toxic effluent into water sources. They also found that none of the five factories had obtained licences or the permission of the Pollution Control Board. Two units had obtained power supply by producing false records, officials said.
