Twelve sewage and soil isolates belonging to genus Pseudomonas were screened for their ability to degrade and dechlorinate 2-chlorobenzoic acid (2-CBA), 3-chlorobenzoic acid (3-CBA) and 2,4-chlorobenzoic acid (2,4-DCBA). On the basis of growth of the isolates of three chlorobenzoates and their subsequent dechlorination rate, an aerobic Pseudomonas strain PNK-3 was selected for the study.

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday directed a six-member committee of experts to frame guidelines to deal with the presence of pesticides' residue in vegetable and fruits across the country by August 17.

A Division Bench of the Court comprising Justice S.K. Kaul and Justice Rajiv Shakdher passed the direction while hearing a suo motu petition in the matter on the basis of a media report alleging presence of pesticides' residue in fruits and vegetables in the Capital.

New Delhi: The Delhi high court on Tuesday suggested the government to rope in eminent scientist M S Swaminathan as an “outside” expert for a panel set up to check pesticide residues in vegetables and fruits.

A bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Rajiv Shakhder stressed the need for a non government expert to be part of the committee and said that the government may consider seeking expertise of Swaminathan or of someone of that stature. It then posted the matter for hearing on March 27.

The Central and Delhi governments on Tuesday informed the Delhi High Court that they have formed an expert committee to periodically examine the fruits and vegetables available in the open market, to ascertain if they contain pesticide residue. Additional Solicitor General (ASG) A S Chandhiok and Meera Bhatia told a bench headed by Justice S K Kaul that the Union Agriculture Ministry had on February 14 convened a meeting with senior officials of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and the Delhi government’s Health Ministry on the issue.
