Himachal Pradesh’s wildlife department has successfully tracked its radio-collared birds to Mongolia, the Caspian Sea, Bangladesh and Siberia, marking a major breakthrough in its pilot project to study the behavior and migration pattern of birds that visit the Pong Dam Lake. Four out of 12 birds that had been fitted with the radio collar at Pong Dam have returned to the lake, while one bird, which had been tracked to Tamil Nadu a few days back is now visiting Chilka Lake in Orissa.

A two-day marathon exercise to count the migratory birds descending on the wetlands of Pong Dam lake near here will commence on Monday.

The annual census of migratory and local birds at Maharana Pratap Sagar (an artificial lake) takes place towards the end of January and beginning of February every year to note the trend of arrival of migratory birds from Siberia and South Asian countries.

Shimla: The government will spend Rs 10.39 crore on creating various infrastructure facilities at the Pong Dam lake in the first phase under the Asian Development Bank-funded Infrastructure Development Investment Programme for Tourism.

Director of Tourism Arun Sharma said his department would also promote community-based tourism activities for generating employment avenues for the local people
