EPA to assess windmill project’s impact on Keenjhar

The Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) has sent a letter to Fauji Fertiliser Company Energy Limited (FFCEL) to stop any activity at its windmill project that may lead to contamination of source of water that falls into Keenjhar lake – Ramsar site – as well.

EPA sources maintained that the FFCEL management had been informed that an EPA team would visit site of project and would examine Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), issued by EPA to FFCEL, whether it is being adhered to.

Draft resolutions for Ramsar COP11

The Secretariat of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Convention) has announced that, following the approval by the Standing Committee of the draft resolutions for consideration by the 11th meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties (COP 11), the Secretariat has finalized all the draft resolutions. This is the second and final batch of available draft resolutions released by the Ramsar Secretariat.

High Court notices to Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh over wetland conservation

The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday issued notices to Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh on a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking directions to the three states for the immediate conservation of their wetlands. The notices were issued by a division bench of the High Court on a PIL filed by Pooja Dhull, a resident of Sector 20, Panchkula.

Guwahati reptiles withstand urbanization onslaught

Despite rapid urbanization, the herpetofauna population of Guwahati has not been severely affected. There are some 63 species of herpetiles in this Assam city. "This is good news and can be termed as one of the best average populations," said herpetofauna researcher Jayaditya Purkayastha after release of his book "Urban Herpetofauna: Amphibians and Reptiles of Guwahati" on World Wetland Day on Thursday.

Celebrating the city’s mangroves

MUMBAI: Several NGOs like Mangrove Society of India (Maharashtra Chapter) along with Vanashakti, Maharashtra Nature Park and various local bodies will organize nature walks and cleanup of inorganic waste from mangroves on Sunday, in order to celebrate World Wetlands Day, which falls on February 2. The purpose of the walks is to expose the participants to the beauty of some of the wetland areas in the city and the dangers being faced by them.
