New Delhi: In a fresh twist in the PIL being heard by the Delhi high court on utility of the BRT corridor, another NGO has moved court against scrapping of the project. National Alliance of People’s Movement, an umbrella organization has sought to be heard as a party to the PIL where HC has ordered a review of the utility of the corridor. Arguing against any move to scrap it, the NGO is likely to field rights lawyer Prashant Bhushan to make their case for retaining the corridor, arguing in essence that it serves the needs of the masses that use public transport.

The Delhi High Court defended the Delhi government’s decision to make Global Positioning Systems (GPS) compulsory for autorickshaws in the city, by dismissing a challenge against the government’s authority to pass this order. The court said such power was given to the government under the Motor Vehicles Act. A division bench of Acting Chief Justice A K Sikri and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw noted the legal provisions accorded the power to the State Transport Authority to pass an executive order imposing a condition.

MUMBAI: After autorickshaw drivers, cabbies are now demanding a fare hike after an increase in compressed natural gas (CNG) prices last week.

The Punjab secretary has issued orders to replace the two-stroke rickshaws with four-stroke ones or to convert the two-stroke into four-stroke.

Two-stroke rickshaws will be banned after March 1, the Punjab secretary said in a notification.

The government is of the view that two-stroke rickshaws caused environmental pollution, which could be hazardous.
