From Wednesday traffic snarls will be back to trouble lakhs of commuters on the BRT corridor with Delhi Government deciding to revert back to the dedicated lane system. The decision was taken in a meeting held by the transport department of Delhi Government, headed by Transport Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely, on Tuesday and the same will be effective from Tuesday midnight.

New Delhi: The BRT corridor is back with the Delhi integrated multi-modal transit system. However, DIMTS officials said signal cycles would go back to the original format only after the rest of the bus rapid transit corridor is restored to the previous state. While officially there is no word on the date, sources said the dedicated bus lane should be back within a week.

On the final day of the BRT trial run, there was no clarity on whether dedicated bus lanes would be continued. The Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) team carrying out the study recommended that BRT lanes are not needed and that vehicular movement be continued as per the plan for the trial run. The Transport department, however, on Thursday said the BRT lane should be operational in a day or two.

The Transport department on Monday said it will file an FIR against Col B B Sharan, who filed a PIL questioning the viability of the BRT corridor, after he got Delhi Integrated Multi Modal Transit System (DIMTS) officials to demolish kerbstones separating BRT lane from the rest of the road. The kerbstones were removed on Saturday night after Sharan told DIMTS officials that the study team had been permitted to remove barriers if needed.

The teeming millions on foot and pedal are powering mobility in Indian cities. Their numbers exceed those who use cars. Yet they are victims of policy neglect. The result is high number of road accidents. Improving public transport systems and road design will encourage more people to walk and cycle. But are cities prepared to make this transition? There is a change of trend in certain pockets of India where communities are organising themselves to assert their right to walk and cycle. These zero carbon emitters have checked the country’s pollution from soaring.

MUMBAI: Buying new cars is set to become even more expensive, with the Maharashtra Motor Vehicle Tax or road tax being raised for both petrol and diesel vehicles from May 1. Moreover, owners will also have to shell out more for petrol and diesel, the prices of which are likely to go up. The development, car manufacturers believe, could hit demand to some extent.

If Maharashtra boasts the country’s largest public transport fleet, it has also earned the dubious distinction of being the top killer on roads last year, causing 3,407 mishaps. What’s worst, Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) also recorded the highest increase - of 203 - in road accidents during 2010-11, while Tamil Nadu saw the largest decline — of 172 mishaps — during the same period, according to a review of the performance of State road transport undertakings (SRTUs) by the Union Road & Transport Ministry.

The Asian Development Bank has established the Sustainable Transport Initiative to align its transport operations with ADB's long-term strategic framework, Strategy 2020. In July 2010, ADB approved the Sustainable Transport Initiative Operational Plan, which identifies road safety as one of the priority areas to be mainstreamed and scaled up in ADB's transport operations. To guide its work on mainstreaming road safety, ADB developed the Road Safety Action Plan.

The Planning Commission vide their Order No.18/3/2011-Tpt dated 06.04.2011 has constituted a Working Group on Road Transport for the Formulation of Twelfth Five Year Plan (2012-2017). In order to assist the Working Group in finalization of its report, MoRT&H vide its OM No.RT-21012/4/2011-T dated 7th June, 2011 had formed a subgroup on “State Road Transport Undertakings” in Road Transport. The Terms of Reference (ToR) of this sub-group gave a wide mandate on different issues concerning SRTCs.

The paper analyses the financial distress in State Road Transport Undertakings (SRTUs). Financial distress is a multidimensional generic term, which is a symptom of fading financial conditions of a business concern. The financial distress in SRTUs is analysed on various aspects and dimensions and discussed through the application of one of the multivariate analysis techniques.
